SAULT STE. MARIE, Michigan (Reuters) -- Overused cliches, wordy redundancies and hyperbolic phrases -- including the Bushism "make no mistake about it" -- were declared banished Wednesday by the university overseers of an annual list of banned words.
Other favored utterances of President Bush such as "material breach," "weapons of mass destruction," and "homeland security," were the tired targets of the New Year's Day list compiled by the public relations staff at Lake Superior State University.

who are these people?

The public relations staff at Lake Superior State University.
With "superior" being the operative word.
What a bunch of snots!

Tundra is not frozen by definition. What it consists of is a vegetative layer covering permafrost. The vegetative layer cannot be permanently frozen or it wouldn't exist. Contrary to popular sports legend, there is no tundra in Green Bay.

I think "Superior" refers to the Lake, not the the University.

One such phrase which always irks me is
"Nevertheless"
To which I quickly reply
"Alwaysthemore"

Have you been to the u.p., eh? (upper peninsula) Let Me boil it down for you:College students, lots of snow, lots of time, no real social outlets, lots of beer. This is the recipe for this list, plain and simple. But on the other hand they make great pasties.
Say yah to the u.p. eh!

"Frozen Tundra" was coined by the sore-losers from Dallas who got their butts adjusted 35 years ago yesterday!
They have no more understanding of tundra than they do about a real winter!
To: Flyer
It is with a different "a" sound.
To: Sub-Driver
I wish they would eliminate "Our diversity is our strength" as an overused, redundant phrase.

I think they do a great service. I've long hated the crap coming out of the mouths of supposedly educated folks for years. It all began when I first heard the term "free gift" and wondered if there were any other kind.

I do know what ya mean! The word has irritated me for many years (kind of like fingernails on a chalkboard) and when I checked the dictionary years ago, it was actually deemed synonymous with the word "regardless". Certainly not a master of grammar, I am still perplexed that using the prefix "ir" does not change the meaning of the word to which it is attached.
As an aside, my last military assignment was in the Upper Pennisula and let me tell ya....if you like snow, you'd love the UP.
Irregardless, have a happy and healthy New Year. :)

Here's a common phrase no one can define.
"Now, Then"
or how about "There, There" or "Here, here" (or is it "Hear, Hear"?)
