One answer came last week, when Saddam Hussein had his Islamic leaders appeal to Muslims worldwide to join his jihad to defeat the "wicked Americans" should they attack Iraq; then he himself threatened the United States with jihad.

As this suggests, jihad is "holy war." Or, more precisely: It means the legal, compulsory, communal effort to expand the territories ruled by Muslims at the expense of territories ruled by non-Muslims.

Jihad did have two variant meanings through the centuries, one more radical, one less so.

Many nutcase religions are dependent upon a type of mystical confusion to survive. Also, if Muslims were to see the raw truth of what they are involved in, many of them would leave in fear. Islam is like a California cult that made it to the big time.

Yes, it would surprise Americans to know that U.S. Marines are buried in Tripoli. I have seen the plaque honoring them there.

Libyans still have the reminder today of our followup to their piracy.

We need to leave some more memorials from North Africa to Pakistan to remind them that we came, took care of business, and will do so again if need be.
