Some people, however, are unable consciously to admit that they have such "unacceptable" emotions.

I think this applies, in general, to the Left in all other areas. Not just guns.

I'd rather be raped than have some redneck militia type rescue me

The women that said this probably could only get an armless blind man to go to bed with them. That way the man wouldn't have to chew his arm off to sneak out of the room.

"You don't need to have a gun; the police will protect you."

I have personal experience that this is factually not true. The police are there to only to notify the next of kin.

LOL. Amazingly, anti-gun pride (principle??) really is this strong in some of them. But I'd like to see their opinions "after" such an event.

"How does my correspondent "know" that his neighbors would murder him if they had guns? He doesn't. What he was really saying was that if he had a gun, he might murder his neighbors if he had a bad day, or if they took his parking space, or played their stereos too loud".

I think that the above quote is the core of the anti-gun movement. I met a friend at a gun shop one day and he couldn't stop shaking when we were inside. I didn't know he was anti-gun. He told me he didn't trust himself with a gun. The anti-gunners are a form of Luddite-ism.

Not only is it not true it's not even legally required.

How can one cop simultaniously defend against criminals more than 1000 (that's the ration in my county)?

Can't be done. But crime is still very low around here, especially home invasion. Nearly everyone is armed.

In our society of little/no responsibility and absolutely no accountability the mass of people are unacustomed to that kind of power. Make no mistake, it is power to own a firearm and there are those of us that have been given the proper tools to deal with it, by our parents of course.

The rest were taught by government that kind of power in anyones hands (outside gubment) is dangerous and that once inside the gun culture who knows???

The police do not want the general public to comprehend this fact. That is, until in a courtroom when the police are being sued. The general public are very ignorant about both police protection and national security.

I'm not shirking the responsibility of the general public but there is a lot to be said for gubment efforts to effect that end...

We have been too long living the good life here. A little strife is in order to get us in the right midset again.

Article is copyright 2000 on the JPFO link. I certainly read it years ago ... and it was great then and is still a great read now. It has also been posted a few times but as I said, it easily bears reposting.

He told me he didn't trust himself with a gun.

I'm not sure that I trust myself with a gun because I've a bit of a temper and a tendency to act without thinking things through properly, but I've no desire to take your gun away. Some people are apparently too arrogant to realise that their insecurities don't apply to everyone else.

Likewise, gun owners who insist that "the government will never confiscate my guns" are also using denial to protect themselves from the anxiety of contemplating being forcibly disarmed and rendered helpless and vulnerable.

BUMP!

Government inform the public? Perhaps. But I think the government thinks it is in the best interest of all (esp.gov't.) to maintain some "myths" within the public conscience. Personal security is one of them.

3,000 people went to work at various jobs, from airline pilot to stockbroker on 9/11 with the impression that they were safer in an airplane or a skyscraper, than in a car on a freeway. ALL of the contributions to the attacks on 9/11 were either indifference by government agencies or impediment by government agencies. It is important that we all watch our own "6".

If I may clearify that statement...

but there is a lot to be said for gubment efforts to effect that end, that end being, misinformation, disarmament, and dependancy upon the state...

I, in no way, meant that as a positive remark about gubment efforts..
