..."Mr. Moyers spent big money on this advertisement in the New York Daily News saying that my assertions about him are untrue. Basically I contend Bill Moyers is using your tax money to run a highly lucrative business. Moyers does documentaries for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which receives $300 million taxpayer dollars each year.

But in the past, Moyers has sold videos of those documentaries and kept some of the profit. So, in effect, we are subsidizing the Bill Moyers capitalistic empire. Not fair, not good.

In his ad Moyers states, quote, "Public television rarely funds my work. I raise the money myself from independent sources. But when it does, PBS owns the distribution rights. The proceeds remain with public television, and my share is minuscule."

But according the Corporation for Public Broadcasting spokeswoman, Carol Florman, Moyers received $769,000 to produce documentaries called "Listening to America" and "What We Can Do About Violence." PBS spokesman George Abar declined to comment when asked what portion of the video sales Moyers got.

So Bill, what say you? There is no question that Moyers is making serious money at the public water fountain. His weekly program "Now" pays him handsomely, and, of course, is broadcast by PBS, which could not exist without taxpayer money.

So this looks bad, Bill. But like the ghostbusters, we are ready to believe you. But you have to show up and put your tax returns on the table.

Moyers is also mad at me because I questioned his cozy relationship with the journalism people at Columbia University. He has given the Columbia Journalism Review some nice money and has received a slew of awards from the DuPont-Columbia folks.

Moyers claims there was no quid pro quo, and maybe he is right. But all I said is that his association with Columbia might make for an interesting documentary. I'll produce it with you, Bill. No public funding. Let's take a meeting.

Look, all I want from Moyers is some accountability. I have nothing against him personally or journalistically. I respect any commentator with an honest point of view. But Moyers has a corporation and is in bed with PBS, which is spending our money. There's stuff going on here that needs to be explained.

Moyers can take out all the expensive advertising he wants, but until he answers specific questions, he is just hosing the taxpayers, in my opinion.

ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, WB, UPN, ect.. aren't PUBLICALLY funded though; that's the difference; capitalism (more or less) ndetermines the "big 3's" revenue, but PBS is at least partly funded by Conservatives who disagree with their obvious liberal bias, through government funds.

Shows how worthless they are that they can't defund something that noone uses or listens to.

Are you kidding me? PBS consistently turns out extremely high quality programming. Cosmos may have been the best mini-series in television history, and it wouldn't have gotten even a sniff at any of the so-called "major" networks. In more recent years, shows like NOVA and any one of the several documentaries by Ken Burns are more than keeping up with the Big Three. I think the only network on TV that rivals PBS in its quality of original programming is HBO. Now seriously, are you actually going to say that "Friends" is a better show than "Cosmos?"

I agree that the Big 3's revenue is driven by capitalism, but this only illustrates a market breakdown. Even the most devout free market advocate recognizes there are market breakdowns in certain areas. The proper role of Government is to deal with the market breakdowns to ensure that everything functions smoothly.

The result of the Big 3 (and other networks, for that matter) being totally driven by capitalism is that the only desire when creating a show is to put butts in the seats for the commercials. The more people that watch a show, the more money the networks can charge for that commercial time. As a result, we get such high quality programming as "Joe Millionaire," "Survivor," "Malcom in the Middle," and my personal favorite, "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire."

PBS, on the other hand, isn't driven by the need to sell commercial time, and suddenly the scope, really the entire purpose of programming is changed--now you aren't interested in producing a show that will generate revenue, but rather interested in producing a high quality product. You can argue whether PBS is successful in doing that or not; it is my personal opinion that they have been successful, but regardless, PBS can create very insightful, important, intellectually stimulating, and educational shows that could NEVER be produced on network television because of the fiscal concerns of the networks.

Are you seriously contending that "Cosmos" was a bad series?

Or, rather, are you seriously contending that "Cosmos" wasn't one of the best mini-series ever produced for American television?
