They're too big to be put on a desktop. The Plasma TV's are really meant to be hung on a wall so you can enjoy the feeling of being in a home theater. Right now they're still expensive but once TV manufacturers agree on a universal High Definition broadcasting format, they should become the wave of the future. Its just a matter of time before Joe Six Pack will buy one to set up in the family living room.

Absolutely PC's display on plasma.

In fact, we're researching the resolution. It looks like NTSC and HDTV are really out of the question. PC driven multimedia is the key for high resolution graphics, good surround sound, and faster ability to spread info.

I visited a GTW center and they have the Plasma display connected via VGA to a Windows MediaCenter PC. Total cost is less than a single display (about $6000 for the plasma display plus the most expensive PC on the market with DVD burner).

KISS HOLLYWIERDO'S GOOD BYE!

Very soon, Freepers can begin using MediaCenter PC to do what DavidDennis did during his historic romp through the Simon Campaign. Except, we can begin reporting from various cities and take cameras to City Council meetings ourselves and make our own news reports on the activities in those areas.

Citizen Vigilante Reporting teams are around the next fiscal year.

God bless MSFT and the GTW guys.

Keep in mind, this display is not really high definition. Its really just slightly better resolution than normal TV.

This is alot like the Apple iPod in a way, and I wouldn't be suprised given how poorly Macs are doing these days if before to long Apple is making more money from the iPod than they are from their computers, looks like the same applies to Gateway

I was thinking about bringing one of these home for Christmas, unfortunetly December-January are very expensive months in this house, so it will have to wait a few months.

Yes, they can. I have seen one at my local Gateway store, and admit they are really cool. I hardly watch any tv, so I have never been able to justify buying a big screen tv.

But this one, because it can hook up to a computer at good resolution, is really tempting. It can even do a split screen with half the screen a computer monitor, and the other half playing a dvd. I think it would be better on my eyes to look at a monitor several feet away than right in front of me too.

I think they will become standard equipment in conference rooms and trade show displays too.

My last three computers have been notebooks, but I think the next one will have to be a desktop with a flat screen monitor and a DVD burner.

I pass the old notebooks on to my kids, but I can't resist the prospect of burning DVDs.

I think the idea that these won't be popular in 10 years is truly going to be one of the "idiot" predictions in a decade.

Once the prices fall, they will become popular, just like DVD's. I can't believe anything else will happen.

Three years ago, I was working with a client of mine Fujitsu General America, based in Fairfield, NJ.

They were selling 42" plasma displays for over $10k. These were fantabulous devices. They can be fed by cable tv, personal computer, VCR, etc. They are merely plasma displays that replace a CRT, etc. that we're normally used to.

I saw a $3,000 plasma TV at Best Buy last week. Looked very nice. Made by Daiwoo. Actually it may have been just a plasma TV monitor to which means it needs to be hooked into a TV tuner.

>>"The second-biggest problem for high-definition TV in America, after confusion over cable and broadcast standards, has been the horrible experiences at consumer electronics retail stores,"

When I got a replacement TV for the den a month ago, my primary criteria for selecting a "sales associate" was "can he operate a forklift and get a 32" TV onto my pallet?"

If you want techie details on this kind of stuff, go to the Audio-Visual Science Forum. It's the best.

Perfect!

In about 15 years or so I'll be able to pick one up for a pittance! I just replaced my 1985ish 20" TV (with dials on the front and a separate cable converter) with a new 27" thanks to a great Boxing Day sale! It's nothing fancy, analog, not a true flat screen, but for the amount of TV I watch it might even have bordered on a splurge. The old TV was starting to have some problems though. I have to admit, DVDs through an s-video connection look pretty great! 27 inches, for me, is a pretty big screen.

I've always had good sound, so I guess for the home theatre experience I'll just have to sit close!

Right now the current depressed world economy will force big conglamerates in every sector into price wars on hot selling items. What will come of this? Slowed technology growth, but with focuses on current technology and reducing costs for what are hot sellers and availalbe now.

Basically, we are going to see cheaper prices on tech introduced in the late '90s, company's will focus all their efforts and realign manufacturing to mass produce high-tech products, fast sellers. It happens in every down turn market, just get ready to start investing big in 2004-2006... the next big tech boom.

Just my thoughts, I can't wait.

I looked at one of these. Good price, but you get what you pay for. Samsung has some new DLP based projection TV's coming out in the next few weeks. They are supposed to have incredible pictures, be reasonably priced and have a very shallow box.

The plasma's are nice, but I have yet to see one that has a real clear picture. Not in this price range. Under $10K. The Gateway had shadows and "lag" like most of these do.

The technology is getting there. In the long-term the "organic" stuff is going to be "oh wow" technology. I think someone mentioned that already.
