I was stunned and horrified when I heard her say that (with a sickening grin on her face). How could anyone who calls herself an American even harbor such a thought, no less voice it.

To wish for "something wrong to happen in the war" is tantamount to wishing harm to our servicemen. To wish this for political gain is evil, contemptible and unconscionable and she should have been fired on the spot.

I posted this on the other, longer, Ratner thread. But I post it here, also, because we need to get a massive FReep going against Fox News. Someone who "hopes" for piles of American dead to cause a Democrat to win the 2004 presidential race DOES NOT DESERVE A SINGLE MINUTE MORE OF AIR TIME ON FOX. (Or on any other media outlet either, but most would pretend not to notice this reprehensible statement on air.)

We need the e-mail of Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox News. Then we need to conduct a world-class FReep of Fox that Ellen Ratner should be fired from Fox News, if she doesn't resign.

Felicity and I stayed up until 1 a.m. last night so we could watch the Show and get the exact quote. Here it is:

Ratner: [After saying that Bush would be "reelected unless the market tanks" she added this:] Unless he messes up the war -- I hope.

Buttner: [Picking up on Ratner's comment:] I hope!?

Ratner: Well, I don't want him to be reelected.

This was not an off-the-cuff comment at a birthday party for an antique Senator. This was in the middle of a prepared bit on "Ellen Ratner's predictions for 2003." Presumably, she was on-air precisely to make these predictions, and had thought about them in advance.

Ratner made it crystal clear that she is "hoping" for large piles of dead Americans, so some Democrat will defeat President Bush in 2004. Her comment is at least as reprehensible as Trent Toll's comment about Strom Thurmond for President in 1948. Under the circumstances that her's was planned, it is worse.

The citizens of FreeRepublic need to go after Ratner with all guns blazing. The blogger world needs to be involved. Talk radio needs to be involved. And this needs to be spread on the Internet.

As another FReeper is wont to say, "Scouts out. Company ho."

Alan Colmes is a "straw man liberal." He's just doing a job, so Fox can maintain its identity as "fair and balanced." I doubt Colmes really believes a WORD he says. He COULDN'T

Ratner on the other hand is a dedicated socialist. Never could understand how she and so many others can think the way they do, but its something we have to deal with rationally.

Calling Ratner and her ilk all kinds of names won't help defeat her way of thinking. Only the cold clear logic of economic reality can do that.

Somebody has to take risks in order to "grow the pie." If no one takes risks, the pieces of the pie just keep getting smaller and smaller as more and more people divide up shrinking resources. That's socialism. It stinks to high heaven.

If you don't believe me, ask any recent Russian immigrant (I know several.) THEY'LL set you straight about the evils of socialism. It's even WORSE than we imagine.

The Ratner's of this world ought to be made to live for a minimum of a year in the Third World under the systems they advocate. If they still LIKE it, they ought to be made to STAY there.

THAT would cure the problem.

You know, I've often wonder about Colmes because he is routinely exposed to logical arguments against his positions, but he refuses to budge. I agree that no one could be that stupid.

Your theory regarding Alan being there just to take a position, whether he believes it or not, could explain how hypersensitive he is to criticism that he's just parroting the 'rat talking points.

I sent Colmes an email about 4 years ago (when they were just starting out) asking that very question, and he replied. I have since lost the email, but Colmes said that he does not take a position simply to be contrary from an academic or debate point of view; he said that he believes all the positions that he takes on the show.
