Seoul, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) -- The United States would deploy some 690,000 troops to augment the 37,000-strong American military presence already here if war should break out on the peninsula, a Defense Ministry report showed Friday.

The augmented forces would comprise of Army divisions, carrier battle groups with highly-advanced fighters, tactical fighter wings, and marine expeditionary forces in Okinawa and on the U.S. mainland, according to the "1998-2002 Defense Policy." The ministry published the report instead of a white paper.

North Korea is crazy, but not insane enough to start a war. They haven't done anything major in the past 50 years. There's no reason to think that something would happen anytime soon.

but a round or two of Quake is just as violent!

Like I said .... video games. Video Game DON'T shoot back with REAL ammo. At least when kids played "Army" ... they were getting real life experience in how to relate to a REAL living group even if it was in a childs game.

When my friends and I played war in the early 60's we used REAL BB guns. We wore swimming goggles BUT when we got popped ... we knew it. The kids nowadays are taught to hate guns and not hurt the feelings of others by excelling. No wonder the Muslim fighters think we are a bunch of wusses ... that's what we have become. If it were NOT for our technology, which is quickly being moved offshore BTW, they would kick our asses.

I was kidding about the Quake comment.

You must have kids about the right age--as do I. I find them to be pretty much the same as you and I growing up. I am comfortable that they will stand the tests of the times. I dont think there is anything I can say that would change your mind.

Agree to disagree, but I respect your position.

" And my son will be one of them. And I guess when our sons are blown off the map, it will open up more room for the illegals and the h1bs. Bush's little business pals must be giddy about this. "

The fact that you believe this about Bush, says more about you than him. I seriously doubt Bush is giddy about American servicemen dying. He's not Clinton for God's sake.

Steel Wolf, I would highly suggest that you get hold The Black Book of Communism. Communism is different from capitalism. Only Communism has been responsible for over 100 million documented deaths in history and with more to come.

There is absolutely no difference between Communism and Fascism--in turns of results and their common core of Socialism. To start calling the Red Chinese fascist is to negate their horrendous past. This is what they who like the West to do.

We formed squads ... had real strategy. Most of the kids had Dads who saw combat in WW2 or Korea. That's not the way it is now. Even the Dads who have seen combat in conflicts after Vietnam really didn't have to spend time in the trenches under enemy fire. There's no one out there now who has the life experience to give todays kids that level of advice.

We're screwed unless we restart the draft. Problem is, I think most of our young people will run for Mexico and Canada if the draft is restarted.

Well why not? Why should all of our young people go off to fight and die, when they would be leaving behind up to 15 million illegal aliens to enjoy America's freedoms, our standard of living, our home town, jobs, our social services, hospitals, etc, etc.

Why should our young people run off to muddy, freezing trenches and and fight, when millions of illegals are sitting here having a good ol time?

I served long ago, and I am beyond draft age, but If I wasn't, I would tell the government to stick it until they did their job and either deport or draft the millions of illegal aliens first. Millions of illegal aliens are sitting here enjoying all the benefits that America has to offer, with no worry of having to fight or take any risk for her.

Get drafted and fight for millions of illegal aliens? When pigs fly.

I don't know, as far as civilians go. I believe the OCS cutoff is around age 32. I would assume it would be roughly the same for warrants as well. The enlisted cutoff is 35, and I doubt anyone older than that would be eligible for starting active military service. I could be wrong, though, and if your interested I'm sure you could pull up the numbers with a little research.

To start calling the Red Chinese fascist is to negate their horrendous past.

I'm not sure that calling communists fascists is letting them off the proverbial hook. Communism is different from capitalism, and it is also incompatible. Fascism and capitalism, on the other hand, are quite compatible, and given the Chinese drive to upgrade their economy, more suited to them.

Communism has directly given rise to the most butchering thugs in all of history. With few exceptions, the great atrocities of the 20th century are their works. Mao and Stalin are sharing the first prize in the 'Mass Murder' category, wherever they're currently burning.

My only point here is that China is evolving from a backwards agrarian communist hybrid into a modern fascist police state. Their goals are the same, their capacity for killing and mayhem are the same, they're just rearranging their economy to be more effecient. This will lead to a China far more formidable and dangerous than it ever was under communism.

I hated Clintoon and Bush scares me. They're both just part of the ruling class.

That is my take on it also. As has been stated here often, if Clinton had done the things Pres. Bush has, the Republicans and those here on FR would be howling about it. I don't know how anyone can believe that President Bush is really sincere about national security when he allows our borders to remain open for whatever wants to cross.

I got kicked off line and then lost the thread - but that is good because it gave me time get through crying after reading your post. It is reality amidst all the bombast and hot air.

We need to be reminded this will be fought by the real sons and daughters and before they are put in harm's way, we should all demand that everything that can be done, short of military action, has been done. If it is then inevitable, we should also demand that if these sons and daughters are going to be sent there, President Bush do everything in his power to make this country safe here at home. This includes taking of the kid gloves with illegals of all ilk and stop playing footsie with Fox and the Muslims. He needs to be honest and upfront and do what is necessary - no matter how hard it is or whatever head of state or religion he might upset = or how many of his corporate donors might get mad. In other words, if we are going to fight terrorism - let's fight it and all the way. Personally, I think our sons and daughters are important enough to demand that.

My prayers also will be with them.

Assume the report is true as to the numbers. How much time would be involved in getting that number of men there? What about transportation of such number of troops there? Where does the transport come from? How long would it take the North Korean military to reach the southern end of Korea? I think we have a loser folks.(Assuming the idiots in Washington do not panic and hurl the bomb.)

There's no need to reinstate the draft, so the point is moot. U.S. military doctrine doesn't call for large numbers of infantry, who would be the quickest to train. There's no way to push enough people through training to become pilots, Green Berets, technicians, linguists, or mechanics to be of use in time.

Just for the record, I was commenting on how young people would respond to the draft. I agree that a draft cannot be effective in meeting a short term emergency need. A draft may be needed if we were facing a major(long term) war i.e. WW2.

The military doesn't need more people, it needs money for spare parts, training, new weapons, and reorganization. Extra personnel now would be fat where we need muscle.

I think that manpower will always be a highly debateable issue. We only have 10 Army divisions. With our current strength, we have many people are leaving the military due to the family hardships caused by constant deployments.

Imagine what would happen if we became bogged down in Iraq, North Korea (million man Army). Not only do we need troops to fight both conflicts, we also need troops as reserves, troops to rotate/replace units in combat, etc. Also we need to be prepared NOW for what if...What if China moves on Taiwan, Japan, etc.

Fascism and capitalism, on the other hand, are quite compatible,

Don't mean to nitpick but how do you see fascism (a form of socialism) being compatible with capitalism (free markets)? Unless you are referring US where Gov't regulations are resembling the fascist system more and more.
