There have been three great Republican victories in my lifetime. In 1980, a campaign centered on strengthening defense, cutting taxes and renewing faith in American civic culture produced a landslide for Ronald Reagan. In 1994, the Contract with America with its ideas of reforming welfare and balancing the budget produced a 53-seat gain in the House that gave Republicans control for the first time in 40 years. The outcome of the midterm elections this year brought the third great triumph. But the work is far from done: Follow-through on five major issues now will determine whether the recent election gains translate into a real mandate for the GOP in 2004.

My wish list would

- eliminate taxing of income. - privatize SS - fight pollution by moving a substantial amount of taxes to fossile fuels (affecting the price of carbon fuels but not affecting the citizen outlays or government revenues) - eliminate the educatiuon monopoly (alas - a State issue) - and last but not least - export liberals.

I would add work on cutting the cost of water desalination as fresh water is getting to be a critical issue in many parts of the USA...not to mention around the world

So what you're saying is that none of the ideas expressed in the Gingrich article have a shred of validity? He committed crimes such as proposing a political approach that took control of the US House away from the democrats in the face of the gentle America loving honest Clinton's wishes otherwise. They haven't gotten it back since. He committed crimes such as espousing term limits, and they haven't happened. In fact a lot of voters that have rethought their position on term limits are criminals too? The stuff he, and others espoused in the 90's didn't happen instantaneously so therefore its all a failure. Given that, you're right. Let's just fold up our tents and never ever again enter the arena of ideas again. Let's just let the democrats have it all. They know best.

The gop leadership does indeed have the opportunity to take bold action which could lead our nation back to common sense, ethical and financial liberty.

Sadly, I doubt that they have any interest.

Name the book...quote the chapter...pages...words. I also assume that you know the Contract With America word for word...otherwise, how else would you know it was a copy?

I read your other link posted on the other thread that had nothing to do with this topic. So I have read both links you posted, and cannot find anything that supports your statement that The Contract With America was an exact copy of something published by Perot prior to 1994.

-The statements on the Perot website were all from 1996.
-The statements from the CNN interview in 1996 were not supported by any specific facts, only Perot claiming to take credit for it.

Should we waste everyone's time on picking apart all the "absolutes" in all of Perot's claims over the years?

I suggest that you re-read the Contract With America @:
www.house.gov/house/Contract/CONTRACT.html.

At best there are some similarities, but in no way could it be positioned of an exact copy of something you have yet to produce in exact wording, published prior to 1994.

If anything, it would be easy to say that Newt Gingrich was proposing many or all of these ideas in The Contract since he was elected to Congress (in my Congressional District) in 1978!
