Says to Allow Practice to Continue Would Be 'Insensitive' Toward Other Religions
AgapePress) - Disney World in Florida says it is canceling its long tradition of offering a place for Christian visitors to worship.
Cybercast News quotes Disney officials who say the theme park can no longer accommodate 1,500 Catholic and Protestant families who want to use the facility for Sunday services. Disney spokesman, Rena Callahan, said it does not seem right to offer only two types of services when there are "so many religions out there." To continue that, she said, would be "insensitive" to the resort's non-Christian clientele.
"It seems like you do need to look at the diversity aspect of this and try to serve everyone to the best of your ability," Callahan is quoted as saying.
Wendy Wright is with Concerned Women for America. She says Disney's family-friendly attitude has been replaced by strict adherence to the business bottom line to the point where the company is willing to alienate and offend its Christian customers.
"Kicking churches off of the property is exactly the opposite of what Disney needs to be doing," Wright told Cybercast. The move, she says, is short-sighted because religious communities and activities help set a moral tone.
She notes the late Walt Disney himself demanded that his employees uphold a moral standard and be sensitive toward families who go to the theme park -- but points out Disney's current corporate leadership is actively reaching out to homosexual consumers that do not typically have children of their own.
The American Family Association called for a boycott of Disney several years ago because of concerns over the company's straying from family values, particularly in its movie productions.
Pro-family organizations have also condemned Disney for allowing the annual "Gay Days" at its theme parks.
Disney's announcement comes on the heels of a decision earlier this month by the Orlando city council to add "sexual orientation" to the city's human-rights ordinance. That new law, which takes effect on January 1, 2003, will apply only within the city limits
I doubt if anybody disputes that. But this is just one more reason (to go along with Gay Pride Day) for Christians to boycott Disney World as a vacation destination.
I agree. I've got 4 kids and hated the two times I went. Long lines, high prices and the "other" stuff is just baggage that I didn't want my kids exposed to . I like Busch Gardens... it's a lot more fun and has better rides and a really cool kids section. Across the street is a water park. So Disney can grab it's ankles for the gay crowd and the "diversity" bunch. I'll take the other parks and Callaway Gardens for the 'real fun'..
Are you going to cancel the Christmas night candle light parade? What the hell are you going to do when the crowd starts to spontaneously sing "Silent Night, Holy Night?" Are you going to expel them from the park?
Don't go giving them ideas. Janet Reno lives right down the road.
If you ever go to California, Knotts Berry Farm is much more fun than Disneyland, and far, far less expensive. Just as an aside, the Knott Family was extremely Conservative and patriotic.
Can't wait to hear the titles of the renamed rides.
Up&Down the poop shoot, Finger licking good car adventure, etc.
