As this thread once again proves, most of the old school southern Democrats are far more "racist" than the current southern Republican leadership. The FDR 'RATs ran a completely segregated south when they were in power, today's heavily Republican south in intergrated.
This would be great ammo to use against the 'RATs, but we are never able to because a few of your "consevative" Dixiecrat buddies will no doubt be drawn to Hollings' segregationist record and defend him and the rest of the old sleazebag segregationist 'RATs as "true conservatives". (Anyone who disagrees with them about racist Democrats will no doubt be labeled a "southern hater" or something like that).
Most of these so-called "conservatives" are actually quasi-liberatarians who have ALWAYS despised the Republican Party, which only further enforces my point.

Post #34 also further illistrates my point about Clinton/Gore's rise to power and contradicts your theory that the only people who voted for them in the south were blacks and "yankee" transplants. Certainly, Clinton could not have won 70+% of the vote in Arkansas without winning over so-called "consevative" (in name only) white Dixiecrats. Ditto with Carter, Wilson, and so forth.
They despise Clinton NOW, but that's because the modern Clinton is known for being President of the United States, a federal office. Clinton and Gore ran on quite a different tone ("I'm pro-life! Really!") when they were seeking statewide office, and had the racist Dixiecrats eating out of their hands.
Southern Republicans, on the other hand, hated Slick Willie during the ol' days, but unfortunately had no statewide power back in the 70s when they had a chance to stop him. I'm not a big fan of Bill Frist, but I am fortuante that his state was at least smart enough to jump off the Dixiecrat platation decades before the "more conservative" deep south. In the 1920s, Tennessee was leaning conservative Republican turf. Probably explains why Clinton and Carter easily won their "conservative" home states but TN threw out but Al Bore Sr. and Jr. after seeing their "leadership" in action.

I am afraid this is mostly an exercise in self delusion. None of the listed Dems has done anything near what Lott did in the last 20 years, and it is all GOP spin. This whole bit that some white Dems are racist fellow travelers too is really quite silly, and simply embarrasses Pubbies, at least this one. This whole line of attack should be dropped. We are better than that. JMO.

You are correct, and that is also true for parts of the Kentucky mountains, as well as some counties in NC. Ditto the Ozarks. Indeed, the poorest county in the nation in 1960, also had the highest percentage vote for Nixon, something like 93%. That was Jackson County, Kentucky.

"Everybody likes to go to Geneva. I used to do it for the Law of the Sea conferences and you'd find these potentates from down in Africa, you know, rather than eating each other, they'd just come up and get a good square meal in Geneva."
"the senator from B'nai B'rith."
"blackbo coalition."
"darkies"
The context of Lott's recent remark was a self-effacing joke. I have no idea what the full context of the above Hollings comments are but it looks like you are the one who is "quite silly", "embarassing" and "self delusional" for thinking that Lott's remark don't occupy the same neighborhood as Hollings listed remarks.

Invite 'em to weigh in on Hollings then, and while they're at it, Byrd. Both are racist southern Democrats and neither is a conservative. Until then, don't assume how the people you speak of will respond.

Errr.... that's nice and all but do you have any links to show these accusations in a clearer light? Unfortunately they aren't in any electronic format that's publicly accessable. The best I can give you are the article dates, authors, and titles. If you'd like to check them out you should be able to do so at most university libraries or major public libraries. They keep the NY Times on record or microfiche, or if not, they probably subscribe to the electronic database that has the same.

Actually Barnett was a segregationist grandstander.
An interesting read are the archives between he and Kennedy as they both postured.
By the time the apex of the civil rights movement of the 60s came, the old true hardliners were past their prime or dead and the much hyped Klan were considered buffons by "civilized Southerners" (which has been more or less the case since Reconstruction). Barnett and Wallace were more like the orchestra on the Titanic. You need to go back to the old Theodore Bilbo days to find the last true believers. WWII turned the tide on institutionalized segregation not just in the South but over the entire country.
Now we're simply mostly just de facto segregated rather than government sanctioned. Of course the Dems still prefer to segregate us for pandering purposes and the blame America crowd segregates us for blame.

None of the listed Dems has done anything near what Lott did in the last 20 years, and it is all GOP spin. I guess Fritz Hollings calling African leaders "Cannibals" just a short 9 years ago pails in comparrison to Lotts attempt at making an old man feel good.
Or Byrd's use of the word Nigger just 2 years ago in a nationally televised interview.

We Republicans do not want to get into this Racist foodfight. Let the Rats overplay their hand by calling all southerners racist and drive more of them, Black and White solidly to our party. What cities are they going to point to as not being racist, New York, Philly, Detroit?? This overplay does not play well in Peoria and they are quickly sinking in the Tar Pits of time! They are out of power and beginning to act like it.
Merry Christmas
