BALTIMORE - The BB gun, like the classic Red Ryder celebrated in a popular holiday film, is a traditional Christmas gift that has always come wrapped in a certain risk. Now the toy carries a threat that has nothing to do with putting an eye out: a $500 fine and two months in jail.

I can build a gun from a radio antenna, a block of wood, a nail, a rubber band, black tape, and a cloths pin. A .22 cal bullet just fits. We called them zip guns when we were kids. Are they going to be able to outlaw that stuff too?

No wonder Baltimore has a big problem. Imagine police commanders who know so little about firearms that they are afraid to pick up a gun because it might be real. I hope that at least the guys who work for them know how to safely pick up a pistol, drop out the magazine and clear the chamber.
