I would have guessed Trent Lott, but the man in question is described as "powerful."

robert byrd?

I'm still waiting for quid pro quo a la Trent Lott from the Black Caucus. You would think they would demand the resignation of an actual sheet wearing KKK Senator who is fourth(?) in line for the Presidency.
It is time for Robert "Sheets" Byrd to resign his seat in the United States Senate.
Best regards,

It was Mikulski, before the sex-change.

They typically give you clues in these things, but none are jumping out at me.
"Powerful" would seem to indicate someone of some stature, either in terms of seniority, leadership post, or committee chair.
Its someone who has been around a bit given the word "ancient".

I don't care who it was. I just hope Begala was the other guy getting "corn holed."

He was supposedly held by cops He would presumably have enjoyed that part of the process.

Look to the governor in NJ for a suspect.

I don't even have a clue as to the identity, but given it's "The Washington comPost", here are some parameters:
1. He's not a Republican or conservative.
2. He's not a white male
3. He's not one who claims to be a Christian.
If he were any of those, his name would have been published in the article.

You can bet that Hillary! has the goods on whomever it may be, though I'll suggest the manly Puff Daschle.

No, says Dickie G., it must have been me.

This is a blind item about a rumor .... not even a known, proven incident.

He was a "rising young politico" when it happened, so he wasn't real powerful yet, but someone high up pulled strings for him. Who would the higher ups have been and why would they have cared so much about his career? Could the House speaker or Senate Majority leader at the time have been from his home state? Was he a friend of the President or VEEP? Who seems to fall into one of these categories? When Lott was starting out Mississippi had two pretty powerful Senators but were they that powerful?
