A ganja gang war is gripping New York City and the suburbs, as posses of high-living, gun-toting Jamaican drug dealers battle each other for control of the region's multimillion-dollar marijuana market, police sources said.
This struggle for pot primacy among three major gangs - the Bloodstains, Pelpa and the John Shop Crew - has left at least 12 shot dead and 20 wounded, and has led to roughly 100 home-invasion robberies over the past year, cops said.

2.) Tax it
3.) Then ban it from New York city bars and restaurants;-)
People who want to smoke dope will smoke dope. The importation of it will continue to fuel corruption and bribery and these insane homicidal gang wars. I am simply no longer willing to let my tax dollars fund a pointless war on some drugs that makes the political management of the Vietnam War by a bunch of empty suits seem masterful by comparison.
Haven't really thought this through, have you?
The business is sordid but is a simple result of prohibition. If we didn't artificially boost the profit potential in marijuana by outlawing it people wouldn't be shooting each other over market rights.
By the way, I don't see it as my mission or my government's mission to "solve" what is essentially a personal problem for smokers of any kind. They are free to choose or should be.
The criminals in prison for drug related offenses are there for dealing drugs, not using them. Don't get too worked up for these scumbags who would sell any drug to any person of any age just to make a buck.
If you're in favor of legalizing all drugs (including prescription drugs) in order to take away the profit from these gangs, that's your prerogative. I don't agree.
What about downgrading the criminal status of marijuana to misdemeanor, punishable by moderate fines?
Similar to DUI, except no driving is involved.
I would just keep the same moderate fine at each offence. The purpose would be to stigmatise the use or possesion as illegal and force the offenders to stay "in the closet". I think that the legal pressure should be a notch higher to the one applied to parking car in the handicapped space or jaywalking. I think that this would calibrate the response to the OPTIMUM level.
Johnny Too Bad
Walking down the road
With a pistol in your waist
Johnny you`re too bad
Walking down the road
With a ratchet in your waist
Johhny you`re too bad
(Chorus)
You`re just robbin` and stabbin`
And lootin` and shooting`
You`re too bad (repeat)
One of these day`s
When you hear a voice say come,
Where you gonna run to?
One of these day`s
When you hear a voice say come,
where you gonna run to?
(Chorus)
You`re gonna run to the rock
For rescue, there`ll be no rock
You`re gonna run to the rock
For rescue, there`ll be no rock
