This is the sort of stunning photo work the National Geographic Society should be doing (again) instead of all the bambi and enviro flakking it champions.

World history would have been so different if only the Tsars had remained.

Er...didn't the homegrown Bolsheviks have something to do with their removal? BTW, why do you use the acronym of STAVKA when that is of Communist derivation?

STAVKA is the Russian general staff, look up to when it dates back, and it has nothing to do with the Soviets as it's founding. As for the Bolshies. Lenin was in exile in Switzerland. The Kaiser and his gold brought him to power, then men like Armnhammer supported them.

What a great post, winodog! Thanks so much. A real Christmas present for us pre-Soviet Russian history buffs.

I noticed in all the photos, not one person was smiling. Life certainly was grim and hard for the common man in those times. Or maybe the photographers of the day had not thought of the phrase "say 'cheese'" yet.

I read the article on the technical aspects of this photography.

There were three negatives, that means three photographs. The subjects had to literally "freeze" while the three photographs were taken, in order to retain registration between the three negatives. This technique was much more suitable for scenes than for people.

How eerie it feels to look back so far in time. With some of the photos, I almost feel as if I am intruding! Bizarre.

STAVKA was the General Headquarters for the Soviet Armed Forces during the Great Patriotic War.

Absolutely amazing pictures, considering their age.

Imagine just how advanced Russia would have been today had she not succumbed to "political correctness" in 1917. We can look at these photos and imagine that we live in pre-revolutionary Russia. But we Americans are aware of the death and destruction wrought by socialism. Let's not lose our culture to the enemies of civilization, like the people in these pictures did.

STAVKA was the high command for pre Revolutionary Russian troops, just as well. Unbelievable, the communists kept the name...gads. What so many people here seem to find hard is that there was a world before the communists and no they didn't invent Russian culture or concepts.

Thank you and you are welcome. I know lots of people on FR have not seen them but would be as happy as you, I and others if they were to click the link.
It is funny how every other day someone finds it and I get a response.
I think I might bump it now and then.
I know there are lots of freepers who are form that area or the forefathers were and I was hoping someone had a ping list so they could enjoy these pics.
You are right how no one is smiling. Even though it was tough to survive many of these people lived a much happier life then we do today.
Some of my friends with the church will visit "poor" countries and I love hearing how even though these people have no cars, TV, electricity, etc, etc. They are very happy with what they do have and simple things give them so much joy.
In many ways they live richer, fuller lives then we do today in our battle fora paycheck and our must have it know attitudes, let alone our 90 mile a hour all day , every day rush to hurry and do what must be done.
