[history]
PRIME Minister Ariel Sharon is scheduled to visit his home-front command tomorrow to see if all necessary measures have been taken to protect Israel during any U.S.-led military campaign against Baghdad.
Israelis remember how Saddam Hussein retaliated for Operation Desert Storm in 1991 by attacking them with Scud missiles.

Now they're aware of reports that Saddam has unmanned planes and missiles equipped with other deadly weapons that could be launched at Israel. Hmmm, I wonder what "other deadly weapons" we are talking about here.

Well, thanks to the Israeli raid on Iraq's breeder reactor...
we don't have to worry about nukes too much...
but I'll bet they have at least chemical, I hope to God they haven't developed biologicals to the point of delivery!!

I hope to God they haven't developed biologicals to the point of delivery!!You mean like aerosolizable powders, 1-5 microns particle size, small enough to seep through the pores of envelope, anti-static coated so it stays in the air indefinitely?
To: The Great Satan
Yes, as a matter of fact...
just like that!!!
Maybe it's time to let old men fight a war...
I'd hate to see a lot of young men go out that way!!!

The belief here is that Saddam will be given a detailed list of Iraqi arms scientists he must allow to leave - with their families - so they can freely talk about his arsenal.
Hussein is a wily dictator but he's got to know that his time is running out. There's no way that the Arab world is going to stand beside him when the bombs start dropping. Those guys love to talk about "rivers of blood" and other hyperbole but, when the pedal hits the metal, they're cowards. He only has a few options: (1) Actually comply with US and UN demands for complete disclosure (not bloody likely) and hope they back off, (2) make a deal with the U.S. and hope that they give him the standard "Baby Doc" dictator vacation package to France (where else? the French love ex-dictators), (3) bribe a non-extradition country like Libya to give him refuge, (4) hope that political pressures at home scuttle the U.S. offensive, (5) hope that the U.S. gets bogged down in fighting, and/or (6) hope that Egypt, Syria and other countries come to its aid (rrrrrrright).
Personally, I don't think it matters whether he comes clean or not. I think our government has made the decision that he's going to be removed from power by any means necessary. And there's no way we're going to give this guy a "get out of jail for free" card. It's too personal for Bush, Jr after Hussein tried to assassinate his Bush, Sr in Kuwait. Likewise, the guy has committed so many atrocities (political assassinations, torture, rape, murder, chemical and bio-terror, etc) that he can't possibly escape the gallows (or in the best possible scenario, life in prison). So, consequently, I have to assume that the only option he really has is (3) listed above. For enough money, he can find refuge in Libya or some other country. Granted, there's no guarantee that our Navy SEALS, Delta Force, or the British SAS won't snatch him in the middle of the night. But that's the kind of existence the guy already lives: He reportedly never sleeps in the same bed twice and he probably sleeps with one eye open. I say damn the UN. He's a menace to the entire Gulf region. Let's not mince words: We need to kill the bastard.

I would remind you that nobody has ever disarmed a regime equipped with Weapons of Mass Destruction before. If you think about it real hard, you might be able to figure out why that is.

Interesting reading, especially when combined with the details of the Iraqi implosion type nuclear device they were designing ( and had plenty of time to perfect by now) coupled with the ballistic missile designs flight characteristics studies that UNMOVIC found in 1997.
I tend to be an optomist, but for once in my life, I am actually having to train myself to look at this in an impartial way. This is going to be a dogfight, straight out, and I dont believe for one minute that it will be similar to the 1991 Gulf War.
However, we will win. Free men fight better than slaves any day of the week.

According to diplomatic reports reaching Israel, the U.S. and U.N. are expected to give Saddam another chance - an "or-else" challenge - before military action would begin. Attack on Iraq Betting Pool

(3) bribe a non-extradition country like Libya to give him refuge,
I thought everyone knew, this is not law enforcement, it is war. The President made it clear about countries that help those we are fighting. If Libya took Saddam in, we would not relie on an extradition treaty to get him, and I think Libya knows that.

Then I guess it is time to write the book on how to do it. As some of these weapons are so easy and cheap to make, almost any piss-ant country could make them, and then threaten others with destruction if they were not given their way.
You then only have two choices, give in to them, or take them out regardless of cost.
MAD worked with the old Soviet Union because both countries were equal in size and capability, and both had a lot to lose (and the leaders were somewhat rational).
If some third world dictator should get ahold of weapons of mass destruction and threaten us with it, we have a lot more to lose then they do. But if you give in to them we lose. So preemtive strikes are going to be the operative word in the future, and that may include those businesses that sell the necessary equipment to these third world countries.

Those missiles that Sharon is said to be worrying about, are not Scuds and include ones with nuclear warheads, at least a few.

Hussein has shown no compunction about using Scuds or chemical/biological weapons when it suits him. He currently lacks a delivery system (ie. ballistic missiles) to carry his weapons outside the Gulf; however, if we ignore him, it will only be a matter of time before the North Koreans supply him with that capability.

You're assuming that Hussein would announce where he's going. Look at Bin Laden. Nobody knows where the creep is.
