(AP) Travel executives say the nation's $91 billion foreign tourism industry is in peril because of a growing perception overseas that the United States has become "Fortress America."
In the year after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, 66 million fewer visitors tried to enter the United States, according to Immigration and Naturalization Service figures. And those who did try were sent back home at a higher rate than the year before.
Travel industry executives complain that the post-Sept. 11 security crackdown at airports - especially some widely publicized incidents in which visitors were searched, interrogated and put on a plane back home - has discouraged tourism.
"There is an impression being made that we are creating a Fortress America," said Rick Webster, a spokesman for the Travel Industry Association of America.
INS officials recognize the concerns but say their first priority is to secure all borders.

You're starting to believe Hollywood
Look, I know some of you Hoosiers and cornhuskers think California is one big Hollywood, and we all have green hair, and are all freakish drug zombies, but you are wrong.
As I stated earlier, who the hell shows up at the rose parade in thousands of motorhomes every year? People from Tennessee, Ohio, you name it. People just like you chump
Who shows up at the Academy Awards, Jim?
People from Hacksaw Arkansas and thousands of others from the mid-west and back east. And that's fine. If that's what floats your boat.
I personally would rather juggle chainsaws than go to those tourist spots that you seem so obsessed with.
And if you believe we are all Charlie Manson's, and other assorted freaks, so be it Jim. Many are blinded by their jealously of California, and you are no different. Very typical I might add. Another big mouth out of stater, one that don't even know where the hell he lives. LOL!
By the way, your spelling, grammar and punctuation are atrocious. You come across as an ignorant buffoon. (Or a 13 year-old-kid.)
Oh, the spelling police strategy? LOL! That's pretty predictable! Hehehe. Let's critique his spelling! LOL! Good one.
Well, I will admit, even though I type 65 WPM, I get sloppy, and my spelling and English was/were never one of my strong points. It bored me to death.
But I am confident, that even a hogjawed, Cornhusker like you, gets the message.
In the future, if you expect anyone to consider you a credible source of information (instead of, as I suspect, one who derives his information from a two hour movie-of-the-week), edit your posts. Stupidity is only acceptable in CA. But not only Kalifornians read the posts.
There you go again, with the movie thing. LOL! I hate most all movies and rarly turn on our wide screen TVs. I consider it a waste of money and time. You folks in cornhusker/Hoosier land ought to do the same.
I have much better things to do here in Cal, as we are, (my boys and my wife, and some other family members) are in the process of building an astronomical observatory that will be remotely controled from our PCs inside of our cabin at the 6500 foot level, at our mountain hideout. An absolute beautiful area I might add. The milky way can cast shadows up there.
It will house my Schmidt Cassegrain, Catadioptric, equatorial mounted, computerized telescope in which we will conduct CCD, (charged coupled device) digital imaging, of low light, deep space objects. This will enable us to take digital (CCD) images of deep space objects, such as distant galaxies and variable stars, binary systems etc.
I have no formal education and have learned most everything on my own. My folks could never afford and formal education for us kids, but we have done OK. Taken me 5 years to save up for the computerized astronomical telescope and we have been working on the new electronically remoted controlled observatory since last April. Of course while the building is in process, we ride our dirt bikes and ATVs on the endless miles of pristine California back roads.
So I suggest you turn your cornhuskin TV off and instead of shooting off your big mouth about all us Californian's being drug crazed, illegal aliens, and perverted weirdos
Many of us here stand quite a few paces to the right of Bush and the honorable Ronald Reagan. We would love to have up to our highlands hideout. LOL! We treat all tourist and outsiders like you the same. You would have to drink some horse choker out of the ol cowboy boot. A real stinky affair.
Make you walk like a duck, an do the chicken all the way back to Indy.
Still feel like getting nasty with Joe? Let me know. I am game.
And I'm soooo sure you have a mountain hideaway, state-of-the-art astronomy tools, big screen TV that you never watch because you hate movies and TV so much, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, ad nauseum....
(Can always tell a liar by the way they brag to people who could care less.)
BTW, who is "Jim?" Is that someone else with whom you're feuding? Bet you stay real busy, don't you?
And for someone who doesn't waste time on posts like mine, you sure spend a lot of time responding to my posts.
I'll repeat what I said earlier, but since you're an uneducated hick, I'll write real slow:
He reminds me of my brother in law from Ohio. He was scared to death to eat Mexican food. He called it dog food! LOL! We took him to a real fine Mexican restaurent and he ordered a freaking Hamburger! Hahahhahah. No kidding...Of course that was 10 years ago, and now he loves it. Thick as a brick. But we still like him.
Oh, jezzzzzzz, yes Death Valley Scotty was another out of stater from Kentucky. Now your point is?
You are right about that one. In CA and NY, the true freaks are not the natives, for the most part. They are the freaks that migrated there because they know they stick out like a sore thumb in their own home towns.
These people are freaks. Latino chicks shave their eyebrows, have a dozen piecings in each eyebrow and dozens in their ears. The dopey guys have more acne and scruffy beards than one can imagine. They harvest zits from ingrown hairs. I'd bet that only 25% of the Califonia population speaks English. No one could pay me to live here. This country is doomed if this is the future of this country. PATHETIC
I live in New Mexico. We are drowning in "Hispanic Cultural Expression here." Which is DemonRat code for voter fraud, complete lack of enforcement of immigration laws, gang violence, open drug marketing, Boom Box cars, abuse of women and children by anyone physically stronger than they, a complete breakdown in civility and intense hatred for the US flag and everything for which it stands.
Not being blind to this outrage makes me a racist in DemonRat eyes. My decent and respectible Hispanic neighbors who see and protest this cultural destruction are labeled traiors to their "Hispanic Heritage" by the lefty thug DemonRat political class.
We have bought a home WAAAAY north and east of here in rural southern Indiana where patriotism and civility (and America) still exist. We will soon be out of here.
Your point is nit picking at best. Here is a little history for you.
Despite the fact that Mr. Johnson never got to see Scott's mine, they struck-up a friendship that would last a life time. Mr. Johnson would return with his wife to winter in Death Valley, for the next ten years. Eventually the couple decided to build a more comfortable lodging in which to spend their winter vacation, and in the late 1920's construction began on the Death Valley Ranch. Scott told everyone that he was building the Two million dollar property with the profits from his mining operation, and when asked by visiting reporters and tourists Mr. Johnson actually agreed, passing himself off as Scott's banker.
You can't argue both sides of an issue and maintain any credibility.
There is nothing to argue here. As even the rich sucker from Chicago went along with it. That's why is called Scotties Castle, not Johnson's castle. Heheh.
Quit being so nit picky! It makes you appear as someones wife that consumed too much morning coffee.
