Where do you think the 'crat in "Dixiecrat" came from? And what party did Strom Thurmond run back to after his failed 1948 Dixiecrat presidential bid? The Democrats. Oh yeah, and when Trent Lott was actually a segragationist, guess which party he belonged to? Yep, the DEMOCRATS.

The Dems say that the DixieCrats are now Republicans and claim the end of segregation as theirs. Incorrect as it may be, it's the general public perception, as well.
The way the debate about race is starting to turn in favor of the GOP, I doubt it's worth too much energy trying to change the perception. It's looking to the past, rather than trying to built the future.

Remember also George Wallace? He went right back into the Rat party as soon as his segregationist stand failed, and they re-elected him governor of AL!
