Here's a clue: it's none of your business. If the Venezuelans want to destroy themselves with socialism, that is their business. They have the right to have any kind of country they want. Do you understand the nature of our struggle against Soviet expansionism? We were on the side of self-determination; the Soviets thought they should have a right to decide how everyone else should be governed. So...which side are you on?
This country is the second largest supplier of oil to the US. What happens there affects us. It's kinda like not dealing with North Korea building nukes because that's their business. Maybe we should just butt out of the Israeli-palastinian conflict because it's none of our business. Our national interests are economic stablity, security and freedom. Where do you draw the line?
In the past, isolationism worked well. Unfortunately, technology has changed that.
Moral relativism is actually a working principle in relations between governments, and there leftists want a black vs. white world. (Of course, it is easy to use propaganda to convince people who is wrong and who is right.)
Moral relativism is an absolute disaster for individuals and always results in self-destruction. Here, leftists want everything to be shades of gray.
"Democracy" is not a virtue, it is a system of government that can be and often is thwarted by such things as vote fraud and propaganda.
Self-determination is desirable, but not always possible. South Africa and Zimbabwe would be much better off with a lot less self-determination.
The Golden Rule is a most excellent way for individuals to deal with each other, but it is insanity to propose that governments follow that standard.
I don't think it's as simple as that. It's not as if all Venezuelans agree with socialism, or that simple things like roads or public works are being voted on. You have one segment of Venezuela choosing, by electoral processes, to loot and possibly enslave another segment.
This doesn't necessarily justify U.S. intervention, but I think we need to have a clear picture of what is trying to be stopped.
Sounds like the crowds in the street want self-determination. I guess I am for self-determination. Chavez out now.
