In my view, the Senate Majority Leader has two jobs: No. 1 is doing what's best for America, and No. 2 is looking out for the interests and agenda of his party in the Senate. Sen. Lott showed during the impeachment trial that he was too worried about job 2 to do job 1. As he's now completely compromised his ability even to do job 2, he should step down as Majority Leader, and give someone with more energy and conviction the chance to get in there and lead.
That said, thanks for the excellent Coulter column, John.

Someone posted yesterday(I think roseoftexas) that Lott should have said the very first day that * I was a Democrat when I held those views, I changed and became a Republican*...it would have stopped them dead in their tracks.
btw....Merry Christmas John!

Back when they supported segregation, Lott and Thurmond were Democrats. Southern Democrats from Reconstruction to the 1970s were conservative, rather than liberal. The South was a one party region, with the Democratic Party as the dominant party. The recent dominance of the Republican Party in the South began when a growing number of Southern Democrats reconciled their political beliefs with their party affiliation by switching to the Republican Party.

If Lott had sid this, it would all be over:
"In 1948, when I was a democrat, I supported those goals, then I became a republcan and changed those views."
?That would have killed the story

The double standard regarding communist influence in America will never be overcome. Our media elites did not find it as offensive as they did the 'ordinary' Americans, like Ronald Reagan, who said communism was intolerable.

When I heard Lott claim that his praise for Thurmond v.48 was over his military policy and anti-communisim, I really thought Lott would get doubly slammed for it. Anti-Communist? 1940s? Lord, you almost had to be a Communist to get a job in certain Washington stables back then.
I haven't heard a word. I guess segregation is worse than Communism is good.
Only a Democrat could think that way.
