Don Nickels and other senior Senators privately discussed ways to ease Lott out of his leadership job before year's end to put the controversy behind the party, Republican sources said.
They said Senator Nickels and others are working on a 'soft landing' scenario to encourage Lott to step down under face saving conditions, which could include another prestigious Senate office.
Senior GOP senators including veteran John Warner (R-Va.) spent several hours on the phone discussing Lott's eventual fate.
There were also private discussions about whether party elders-perhaps former GOP leaders Robert Dole of Kansas and Howard Baker of Tennessee--should approach Lott soon to ask him to step aside for the good of the party.

Just heard McGovern is defending Lott. "He shouldn't step down", or some such comment.
Well, if McGovern is saying that, It really IS "time for Lott to go".

IMO, McGovern knows that Lott is more valuable to the Rats as a pinata to bash for 2004 and now he is defending him.

"Understand I'm not a Lott fan. I can't stand the guy, but this is not the reason to dump him. This may play into the RATS hands. If you notice, their atacking Nichols now for being a racist."
It won't stick on Nichols.
The charge of racism has stuck to Lott, like tar sticks to the bottom of your shoe. Let's face reality. It's time to take off the shoe.

Shades of Richard Nixon. They sent a delegation like this to him, and he resigned.
That was my thought exactly as well when I read this. Can anybody remember all 4 GOP senators who were the ones to bell the cat and make that long trip down Pennsylvania Avenue, to tell Nixon that he couldn't win this one?
I know two of them were Barry Goldwater of Arizona and Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania. Who were the other two?

We're still looking at this problem in 2004 even if Lott steps down from Leader, with the Dims trying to play the race card all over the South.
My prediction, Haley Barbour wins the Governors chair in 2003, and then Trent accepts a teaching position at Mississippi State's 'Trent Lott School of Public Leadership'

Well, of course, Haley winning the seat certainly seems an ideal solution to this mess. But I don't know that he wants to go to Washington, that may be one reason he plans to run for governor, so he can stay home. As I understand the statute, if Lott resigns his senate seat by the end of this year, then Musgrove can appoint someone to temporarily fill the seat for 90 days until a special election is held. If he resigns after 1 January then whomever Musgrove appoints holds it until the next scheduled election in November. I'm so tired of this mess and you know Mississippians are sick to death of it.

Do you really think Lott is a racist? Based on what, the birthday speach?

There is the just created Deptartment of Homeland Security Chairmanship without a Senator to staff it.. And Lott being 14th in line in Seniority (out of 13 chairs now) would be a good pick for the job. Excellent, excellent idea. Homeland Security will be about as far away from racial issues as it could be (except for profiling of Muslims, and I can't believe that's a losing issue for the GOP). And Trent can convince himself it's a post of enormous national importance. It lets him save face, and it gets him out of the way.
