Don Nickels and other senior Senators privately discussed ways to ease Lott out of his leadership job before year's end to put the controversy behind the party, Republican sources said.
They said Senator Nickels and others are working on a 'soft landing' scenario to encourage Lott to step down under face saving conditions, which could include another prestigious Senate office.
Senior GOP senators including veteran John Warner (R-Va.) spent several hours on the phone discussing Lott's eventual fate.
There were also private discussions about whether party elders-perhaps former GOP leaders Robert Dole of Kansas and Howard Baker of Tennessee--should approach Lott soon to ask him to step aside for the good of the party.

The longer this thing goes on, the more ridiculous it seems, and the less I think he should step down.

"There were also private discussions about whether party elders-perhaps former GOP leaders Robert Dole of Kansas and Howard Baker of Tennessee--should approach Lott soon to ask him to step aside for the good of the party. Never happen. Both have class and people with class don't kick someone when they are down --especially over a thought crime. Warner puffed himself up when he married Elizabeth Taylor and never got over it. Witness Ollie North.

I hope you are wrong. Lott has got to go asap before he does any more damage....If he doesn't he will drag us all down into a guilt-by-association, pro-affirmative action endless "atonement" quagmire.

Trent, I guess it really is all about you...(sigh)
Maybe the recent admissions that you really want to be America's first black Senate Leader could land him the committee chair on the NEW Slave Reparations Comittee...

You miss the point. It is not about kicking someone when he is down. It is about getting rid of a giant and growing liability for the GOP: Trent "I love affirmative action" Lott.

Never happen. Both have class and people with class don't kick someone when they are down --especially over a thought crime. Ummmm... Bob Dole was already on Fox News last night saying that Lott should step down for the good of the country. IF he was willing to say so to several million viewers, why would you thinkg he wouldn't say so to Lott?

What are they gonna do, load up on Bob's viagra and teach Trent a thing or two?

I think both Baker and Dole know how much damage this might do for 2004 and will be willing to talk it over with Trent..
Not to 'kick him' when he is down, but perhaps explain the situation more forcefully since the White House will not become involved.

I dunno,,,I can see Bob Dole and Howard Baker asking him to go. When he got on BET and started vowing to rethink the Pickering nomination and affirmative action, I decided it was time for that phony unreconstructed racist cheerleader compromiser in chief to go. If this were anyone else I might feel different. But his phoniness and his pandering are just too much.

Understand I'm not a Lott fan. I can't stand the guy, but this is not the reason to dump him. This may play into the RATS hands.
If you notice, their atacking Nichols now for being a racist.

Shades of Richard Nixon. They sent a delegation like this to him, and he resigned. Needless to say, the Democrats did NOT do this to clinton. Nor should the Republicans agree to do it to Lott. Why on earth should Republicans act as hatchet-men for Democrat liars and extortionists?

"This may play into the RATS hands." Key word...."MAY".....we can no longer live by what the RATS MAY do.....we must do what we gotta do....and getting rid of Lott is a day late.....We need to stick to convictions.....of which LOTT HAS NONE! (as he's proved in the last few days.)
