There is always a great deal of free floating hostility in any society. One way to discharge it and remain above reproach is to take a morally superior stance and dump on the poor soul who has sinned.

Lott has committed a "thought crime." That whiteys like Sabato sit in judgement of him and want him gone speaks more about Sabato and others of his ilk. Lott is smart enough to know he has said the wrong thing.

Until he does something egregiously wrong, he shoud stay. All those conservatives who believe they are morally superior should form a circle, load their weapons and pick out the next target. In the meantime, by your hubristic narcississm you have made feasible not only the loss of a previously respected man, but the loss of a Senate seat we cannot afford to lose.

First of all Lott should not quit. He should only step down from being Majority Leader.

If he does quit then the dems are another step closer to taken back congress which is what all of this is about in the first place.

Lott needs to suck it up, STFU, and become a backbencher.

He sucked as a leader, got 1000 chances and failed. Now because he doesn't get his way, he threatenes to QUIT.

I personally could care less if he is a racist, was just telling a joke, or was PO'ed and let comments fly out. It was a DUMB thing to do on his part. My guess was that it was a smartassed remark. However, smart ass remarks can come back to bite the entire party.

As for quitting, if he quits completely and throws the senate to the dems, it is HIS fault, and ONLY his fault. Not those that pressured him, HIS. Period, since he makes the final choice.

I turned on CNN some time ago and I think the black anchor started this. He was egging this very thing on and suggesting this. He said Lott has a nuclear bomb to negotiate with his own party-the mere fact he could bolt.

Since Lott's problem is purely political he should play hardball with Republicans and resign his seat on January 1 assuring that a Democrat would be appointed to fill it including a return to Daschle 'power sharing' until the next election.

Republicans should stand behind him and not let the WH, Frist or Nickels jeopardize their majority status.

I thought the Republicans should have gotten rid of Lott earlier as Leader. My mind was made up over his inaction during impeachment of Klintoon.

Having said that, I believe his remarks about Strom were innocent. However, he should have realized that the liberals are looking for a way to call the Pubbies racist; ie, he should have forseen how his comments would be interpreted by blacks and the press. Therefore, after the fact he should have stuck by his guns if he was truly innocent.

But now after the events of the last week, he should step down from his position as Leader voluntarily because he is now tainting the entire party. Then he should remain in the Senate until which time the Republicans can retain his seat.
