ANCHORAGE, Alaska Coast Guard rescue crews are into their third day of searching for the pilot of a floatplane overdue from a hunting trip to Admiralty Island.
Lawrence Howell, of Petersburg, departed Petersburg en route Admiralty Island for a day of hunting on Friday. A friend of Howells reported him overdue Friday evening when he failed to return.
The plane is a cream-and-blue, Cessna 180 floatplane and reportedly is equipped with an emergency locating transmitter (ELT) and flares. The Coast Guard did not receive notice of an activated ELT in the area.
Crews from a Coast Guard helicopter based in Sitka and the Juneau-based cutter Liberty are currently searching. Also assisting with the search are Civil Air Patrol and Good Samaritan planes.
The searchers scoured Admiralty Island as well as the adjacent bays, islands, inlets and inland lakes. Search planners in Juneau developed nine different searches for today. The searchers will focus their efforts on Frederick Sound and Stephens Passage.
So far, the search crews have seen no signs of the pilot or plane or any other signs of distress. Search crews are making periodic radio calls and continually monitor emergency radio frequencies with no response.
A fishing vessel skipper reported seeing a plane possibly matching Howells approaching Gambier Bay at about noon Friday (Dec. 13). The Coast Guard asks that anyone who has seen the floatplane in the vicinity of Admiralty Island, Frederick Sound or Stephens Passage call 1-800-478-5555 or the nearest Coast Guard unit.
The jokes, graphics, pictures and stories about our military on the move are FANTASTIC! I'm enjoying this as much as everyone else - as always.
