Here's the quote: In words that seemed sure to surprise and possibly infuriate a good portion of Sen. Trent Lott's traditional political base, he told his interviewer, Ed Gordon of Black Entertainment Television, "There has been immoral leadership in my part of the country for a long time."

I heard Brit and the panel mention something along those lines before Lott's appearance. I couldn't bring myself to watch so I'm guessing that the above quote that I picked up from another thread is what they were referring to.

Ed Gordon asked him if he'd reconsider the Pickering nomination in light of what has happened......he said he would.

This guy cannot be kept as Majority Leader.

"WE want him out of the Leadership and OFF television. He's making an ass of himself..and as long as he is the ML, he is managing to make fools of all of us by extension."

We should have cleared the underbrush when we were victors on 11/5. We should have the upper hands on issues of race. Now, issues of advocacy are, once again, being handed to the Dems and only a strong leader can fix this. Lott *certainly* has proven to be the best tool the RATS could have. Again.

Every single word of it. You better believe it.

He may have won over blacks tonight, but he sure lost me if ANY of what I have heard is true.

"I guess Colin Powell and Condi Rice are racists then."

Colin Powell is affirmative action, which is reverse discrimination, period.

Bush Backs Race-Based Program Justice Dept. urges the Supreme Court to uphold affirmative action for contractors
ÊBy ERIC LICHTBLAU, Times Staff Writer

August 11, 2001

WASHINGTON -- In the most closely watched affirmative action case in recent years, the Bush administration on Friday defended a federal program that uses race as a factor to create a "level playing field" in doling out billions of dollars in government contracts. The Justice Department's position, coming in a case that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear in the fall, marked a departure from President Bush's past opposition to government racial preferences.

"I can't make it any clearer for you."

Good. Thank you. I've been branded with enough hateful epithets on these Lott threads to last me a lifetime.

"Santorum is NOT a RINO, my friend.....solid conservative...strongly pro-life....and he shown that in a swing state like PA you don't have to soften your beliefs....also, he's very articulate and photogenic......Nichols isn't......and that's a problem in media driven politics...."

I agree. Santorum educates people with logic and sincere passionate belief and is believable. He's my choice if I had a vote, which I don't...maybe we'll actually see school choice now?

I have not mentioned this before tonight because I didn't want to question Trent Lott's support for his fellow republicans. And I assure you that I noticed this some time ago and I am not piling on.

But I have a few questions for you tonight! How many times did you see Trent Lott out on the campaign trail stumping for Republican candidates in this past election?

How many times did you see Tom Daschle out stumping for democRATS?

Methinks there might be more to why the White House isn't more supportive, But I could be wrong.

I ask this question because several weeks ago I said to my wife that Tom Daschle campaigned for Torricelli one week and asks for him to step aside the next. She replied...

"At least he is out there campaigning, I havn't seen Trent Lott out there risking any political capitol supporting republicans"

I said to her, How do you know if Trent Lott is campaigning for his party or not? and she said...

"You make me watch the NEWS when you come home and I see President Bush out there campaigning like a man on a mission and I often wonder why I don't see Trent Lott out there like I do Tom daschle?"

Well even though I don't like Lott as a ML, I thought he was unfairly attacked on his Thurmond comment .. I still do, but he really didn't help himself tonight and I think he ticked off a few folks

White House officials tried to discourage the impression that they were orchestrating Lott's downfall. Fleischer said the call by Nickles to Rove "was described to me as a notification call and nothing more."

BET message boards..

An example

"Trent Lotts statements tonight on BET only proves that white folks in key positions can say what they wanna say, when they get ready and do what they wanna do, as long as it's not directed to any key white person and still remain in office of on their job unlike blacks, which can't do that. I proves that the president of the United States condones what Trent Lott has said because he said that he won't be asking him to step down."

He didn't win a damned thing. Black folks (i.e., black liberals) are ticked off that he came off as condescending; I'm pissed off that he shoved his foot even further down his throat in what clearly was a desperation move.

He had a shot at keeping things status quo before tonight - his Friday apology was rough, but with time, it could pass. But this? Nope. He's toast. And if we lose the Senate to the Dems, Lott has only himself to blame.
