"You are really helping..."

I noticed you've done a lot to help, what with all the namecalling and broad brush accusations against anyone who isn't falling all over themselves in defence of Lott. It's hard for us to defend a man whom we personally do not like and have no respect for...but some of us are still trying.

" he would reconsider his support for Judge Pickering. "

Did he really bail on Pickering?? Yesterday,Julianne Malveaux caused an uproar on CNN's Late Edition, when she called Judge Pickering "another sheet wearing,KKK Republican." Maybe Trent has become the first Black Senator -which could be his salvation. Who could denounce him, then??!!

Santorum is probably much too young and green for the slot.He also would have to smooth off some rough edges to sit at the high table, and it's those rough edges that make him popular with the base, but not so if he aspires to a leadership role.He maybe better suited at being a Committee chair, which gives him the flexiblity to be Rick and hammer his fave issues.Being a Majority leader is perfectly suited to someone like a Lott.

I think it was better that Jesse Helms chaired Foreign Relations all those yrs rather than being SML, even though he was the most right wing guy around.Get the right guy for the right job.Would Jesse have been as good as SML or chair of the Foreign Relations Committee would you have prefered...Arlen Specter??lol

Horses for courses.

Look, I don't know how many times this needs to be repeated, but the reason so many are calling for his head is NOT for the original gaffe, as stupid as it was, but for the way he handled the fall-out. He is not fit to be President Bush's main man in the Senate!

In trent's defense he did say Pickering was a good man and that he still thinks Pickering deserves to be confirmed. But he said he would re-consider his support, But DID NOT bail on him

"If Clinton had only apologized. We would have forgiven him."

See where apologies get you?

NOTHING he could have said or done would have stopped this lynching.

you like looking at what you did to a good man? Pathetic all of you are sick

So we forced him to adopt affirmative action as his top priority? He mispoke, he mishandled the problem and every time he opens his mouth he digs a deeper hole. So we are responsible? yeah right.

Actually that sounds like Lott is playing both sides of the fence

Either Lott wants Pickering or not

You are so wrong it is sad-- and revealing about your desperate search for Lott's saving graces-- Sad because Lott's denial of his affirmative action position for many years has been thrown down-- sad because his offer to put more black and minority people on his staff when one sees how really small amounts of those people he has REALLY added--and sad because he has laid himself postrate in front of tne heavy hitters on the left who will jump in and crucify his Republican "comrades" who will still fight the good figfht agains affirmative action etc, etc.

Maybe the people in Mississippi appreciate the jobs that he brings to the state. Many of them are black and need the jobs as well as the whites. The delta region is a very poor area that needs someone's help. They have been ignored by the likes of Bill Clinton and the Democrats for years. Now that the Republicans are in office and have the White House I'm sure they would appreciate the help.

Too bad that a bunch of kooks are trying to keep it from happening. They used this same tactic on Jay Dickey(also helped get the project started) by running the James Byrd ad and saying he wanted to kill him all over again. Nevermind that he employed more blacks, in his personal business as well as all his offices, than Mike Ross(D) has ever met. They tried to do the same to Governor Huckabee and did do it to Hutchinson(for a different reason) because we really need to get Hillary Clinton elected as President. We are going to need all those southern politicians replaced with RATS to help get her elected.

Everytime I tried to get on BET-there was a commercial, so I only saw the last 2 minutes. What were the grounds for Trent re considering his support for someone he thought should be confirmed?

RE: the white Mississippians who voted for Trent Lott because he was against affirmative action, I guess they probably feel betrayed, but that goes to my point.

If Lott (or any other politician) is clear about what he believes, what he supports, and can articulate sound reasons, then he wouldn't have to flip-flop depending on the audience.

If it was my call, I would not acknowledge some adversarial questioner's definition. I would have campaigned on a platform of specific positions which I could unblinkingly defend if asked by some BET interviewer.

After the interview I will NOT defend LOTT period. But I thought kcv1 was calling the ones not defending Lott racists?

Lott, promised in the interview...

To vote in favor of affirmative action.

To steer away from the Citizens white supremicists group he nodded his head yes to being a part of (he did not deny it)

And to start a civil rights group activisim.

The republican party will be fine. They will still have and hold onto the majority with a new ML. Trent will be on some committee giving a billions of our taxpayer dollars to BET and the black caucus (as he vaguely promised in the interview) in some back room long forgotten in a week.

"I missed the show .. how did he do??"

I only caught bits and pieces of it, but he basically did badly. When he started getting mad, they cut to commercial. He mentioned the number of black voters in his constituency, and that he's very popular in his home state, which was good. But he wavered a lot. He is now for affirmative action, said he'd reconsider the Pickering nomination....ARRRRGH!

It seems that if you throw this guy a rope to pull himself out of the hole he's dug, he hangs himslf with it instead...and US with him!

You are in favor of keeping a racist?

I want him out of the top ranks of the national leadership. If Mississippi wants him as their senator, they can have him. It's not my choice to make, and he doesn't represent me as the Distinguished Senator from Mississippi; as Senate Majority Leader of my party, he represents me.

Haven't you ever watched any targeted cable channel before?

Yes, BET shows a lot of black actors and reporters; they advertise a lot of black-oriented products. If you ever watch the Latino channels (HBOLatino, Univision, Telemundo, et al), most of their commercials showcase speaking in Spanish.

BET is owned by Viacom. According to their website, Viacom's chairman and CEO is Sumner Redstone; the president and COO is Mel Karmazin. You can relax ...

You know, for a person who doesn't like quotas, you sure like to count black and white faces.
