According to this week's edition of "Capitol Weekly" (Sacramento CA) 1,879 state employees were promoted during October 2002 alone - right in the thick of the "hiring freeze" instituted by Gov. Gray Davis due to the budget crisis in the state. LOL! Names of the people getting promoted, departments & SALARIES are printed in this paper! LOL!!
In addition, a total of 26,844 promotions DURING CURRENT STATE HIRING FREEZE have taken place. LOL!! Again, names of the lucky people who got promotions, along with department & SALARY, are printed, too. LOL!!!!
And finally, over 500 new state vacancies are advertised in this same edition of "Capitol Weekly".
They want you to sign up for January 14, 2003, "How to Get a State Job Workshop", and here's the pitch:
"The best time to land a new or better state job is during a hiring freeze! Why? Headlines discourage thousands of the applicants; therefore fewer apply to meet the state's continuing and critical hiring needs -- your chances are better! The last 8 workshops have sold out - don't wait until the last minute - sign up today! Cost $55/Person Call (916) 444-7665!"

When I worked in state government, I always loved the promotions during hiring freezes. I'd type the person's name into the employee directory and see what other people had the same last name. Often enough, some person higher up in the department or in personnel would have the same last name. No, there is no nepitism at all in state government [rolls eyes].

Yea, & the so-called conservative in the White House has raised spending nationally more tahn any other since JBJ. So what's different.

Just like in business. Hiring freezes are an announcement you make to placate investors/ creditors/ the tax payers. But you don't actually stop hiring, or if you do it's a total coincidence.

Smoke and mirrors. The headlines make the taxpaying public feel good but they don't have a clue what's going on in reality. Oh, well, that's California for you.

That's peanuts in Washington (state). In California it's a joke. No wonder they have openings...

Right. Davis is the "education governor". LOL!!! This state is beyond corrupt.

Y'know, as soon as I hit the send key, I realized that I was focusing too much on the smaller figure. Plus, there is such a wide range of programming type jobs that it really depends on the language, etc.
I was thinking more of mainframe work. And the higher figure is at the bottom of that range in Seattle. Of course, we don't have the cost of living and tax problems one has in California, even with the median house price at around $300k here right now.
The TAXES on the house I live in right now are twice what my rent payment was 20 years ago...

Interesting to note that the employees unions ALL endorsed Gov Davis and virtually every other democrat running for any office. All kinds of back-room deals and political shenanigans. OBVIOUSLY!
To: Saundra Duffy
Do the unions get a good chunk of the increase?
To: Saundra Duffy
And they stole the hiway gas tax money for their smoke and mirrors deception before the election and the press looked the other way yet they are the biggest whinners about their commute.
To: CounterCounterCulture
Of course the unions get a chunk. This state is a right to unvoluntarily contribute to a union state , you know :-)
To: NormsRevenge
Of course I knew the answer to my own question :-)
