Correction: Lott said he won't quit the Senate even if he is deposed from Majority leader. He said his term runs through 2006, and he intends to fulfill it.

I don't want Lott to quit the senate. I just don't want him to be the SML. To be honest, I wouldn't have expected him to quit the senate were he not allowed to assume the position of SML. I don't think he's the brightest bulb around, but I don't think he's a quitter, either. It wouldn't fit that Southern code of honor.

I don't know if honor has anything to do with it...Being a senator is not bad: pay, pension, benefits are all excellent, no heavy lifting, people fawn on you...pretty good life for a sharecropper's son. What else does he know to do? There probably aren't a lot of job openings for 62-year-old male cheerleaders.

Sounds good to me - it would be great to see Frist or Santorum in there.

I'm no big fan of Lott, but if he quits the Democraps and their willing Propagada Ministers in the mainstream media have won. Lott was just paying compliment to a 100 year old man! Most people wouldn't have thought twice about his comments until the media decided to read more into them by fabricating this racisim thing. Most Americans didn't even know Strom ran for President much less about the Dixi-crat party! Give em hell Trent! Don't let the propagandists win!

What a shame that he could not have been so tough when dealing with Dims in the past, instead of the get-along approach.

Actually I don't care what he said at Sen. Thurmond's birthday party. I DO want him out of the leadership position. I don't know if he is a closet queer or a child molester, but I do know that he is responsible for clintoon remaining in office for two years more than he should have.

While the senate may not have convicted clintoon regrardless of the evidence and witnesses that SHOULD have been allowed, the senators that voted not guilty would have paid a price for their not guilty votes had the public been able to see the evidence and hear the witnesses. "chester", gave them a free pass to vote without consequences. Why? Is he a closet queer, a child molester or something worse? (I don't think there is anything worse than a child molester) but something is in his background that caused him to roll over.

Well, that can't be right. Freepers have been howling all week that Lott is too proud, or too greedy for lobbying or board member dollars, to perservere in the Senate if his fellow Republicans select another majority leader.

Who you gonna believe, Freepers, or Lott? ;-)

"Lott said he won't quit the Senate even if he is deposed from Majority leader."

With this statement now out , it's now only a matter of time. He would be wise to announce the scheduling of a new leadership election as soon as possible. That way he could go out looking like the good guy giving the others a chance to reconsider in light of his recent gaff. It's going to happen whether he goes along or not. Might as well exit with the maximum grace possible.

You make an excellent point. Of course, he could go into lobbying.

And now Lott and the Southern, segregationist roots of the GOP.

Outrageous revisionist history alert!

There are no "Southern, segregationist roots of the GOP." Those people were Democrats. Lott was a Democrat. Thurmond was a Democrat. George Wallace was a Democrat. The "Dixiecrats" were Democrats. They were all Democrats.

Lott was just paying compliment to a 100 year old man!

Try to tell that to Time magazine, Newsweek, the New Republic, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, NY Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun, Atlanta Urinal and Constipation, LA Times, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc..

They will play this story until the cows come home and until the House, Senate and White House are DemocRAT.

If, as now seems likely, Lott steps down as SML to just a plain Senator, will the pubs begin talking about the Dem offenders??? I would hope so, particularly with Frist or Nickles at the helm it seems likely that we'd see turnabout. How would dems respond to KKK byrd, to anti-civil rights votes, etc. The evidence is damning, and it is everywhere.

The liberal media wouldn't want to go along, but with Frist/Nichols in the bully pulpit of the senate, and with talk radio and internet the way it is, IMO it would be interesting.

It's not a win-win to have Lott step down, but it's a no lose- win situation.

Lott is most definitely a racist. His recent comments and his past statements and associations all point in one sad direction.

This guy is a dinosaur and the Republicans can ill afford the likes of him in a position of leadership.

He should step down and let our party get on with KILLING THE DAMN, FACIST RAGHEADS!!!!

Not since Ronald Reagan invited the southern democrats into the GOP. Heck, Reagan was a Democrat.

The parties have basically reversed themselves.
