Missing the point. Lott made his political blunder on the eve of the Louisiana Senate runoff. He helped turn out the black vote for Mary Landrieu. Now, if he is replaced as majority leader and resigns, giving the D governor of Mississippi a chance to name a D to the Senate, that would be going from 51-53 seats in November to 50 in December. Even Jeffords only gave the Ds one seat. And that was after Jeffords voted for the Bush tax cut.
