On Fox News Sunday, they mentioned a statement put out by Lott's office in response to Nickle's announcement. They called Nickles call for new elections something like "blatant opportunism."

The gloves are off! May the better man (who in my mind would be pretty much any GOP Senator other than Lott) win!

The exact quote by Lott's office was that Nickles statement "is a cynical exercise in opportunism." In other words, Trent Lott is scared to death of a Nickles challenge to his leadership because he knows he will probably lose. In fact, Nickles statement is what we would expect from a principled conservative leader who has the best interests of the GOP at heart. If Lott did as well he would resign. Now, the real risk is this--too many challengers to Lott where the anti-Lott vote is divided two or three ways allowing Lott to eke out a narrow victory with as few as 18 votes. That said, I still don't think he reaches that threshold in the event of a three way. Without the President's support, Lott is toast.

Apparently the Lott office is watching the Sunday TV firestorm - lol - where was Lott last week, why didn't he come out immediately and apologize..the ship has left the dock, Lott is a huge liability for the Republican party, better to lose the senate than to have him on board.

If Bush wanna play hardball and push Lott off the cliff, he can have Colin Powell, Condi Rice coming up on TV shows on unrelated topics like Iraq, and yet making statemnets on how Lott doesn't have their confidence in the congress or something like it will be difficult to work with him blah blah...

Powell and condi are the major trump cards Bush has in this matter...sorta like the Nuclear devices from Genreal Rove...lol..
