All is fair in love and politics... I don't blame Lott for threatening... what does he have to lose?

The Republicans should have waited until the new senate was seating in January anyway and gone to Lott then about his ineffectiveness as leader and told him not to run because of those issues not this one...

Good. Sound fellow. Lott should recall how he behaved during impeachment - his idiocy and mendacity has finally come back to haunt him. Had he been a man of principle, I dare say conservatives would have fought like tigers to save him. As he betrayed the most important cause that ever came his way, his support is tepid at best. Just so.

Exactly. If Lott were a strong conservative like Nickles or Kyl, I would be doggedly defending him and attacking all those calling for his resignation. Lott needs to resign for several reasons of which this is only one. I only hope that someone less conservative and equally likely to cave to the RATS like Frist or McConnell does not replace him.

It is about the Dems too... Its about hypocracy... Why is it wrong for Lott, who as majority leader has no claim to the line of the Presidency, but its okay for Byrd who WAS fourth in line?

I"m not on the one term bandwagon. What gave you that idea. All I'm saying is that if things go bad for the President in the next couple of years then he may well pack it in. I wouldn't surprise me one bit. He's a compromiser from the get go. If it doesn't go his way and he can't win why stay and fight?

I hope I'm not right but it could happen, imo.

"In my view we have the chance to capture the moral high ground and hold it."

Nothing we could do could ever ever capture the moral high ground in their eyes...

I have never understood why any true Southerner would want anything to do with the party of Abraham Lincoln anyway.

If Lott were smart, he'd step down in exchange for somebody getting to be leader who might treat Lott well. When Trent loses this challenge, he'll be lower on the totem pole than Coleman.

Which would also make me question our President's stance on them.

We'll find out for sure in Sept. of '04 when Bush is presented with the option of renewing Clinton's 1994 (misnamed) assault weapons ban. If he does indeed do so, I won't vote for him.

I would enjoy seeing Lott get replaced as GOP Senate leader, but not under the current set of circumstances. It's outrageous and appalling, that both conservatives and rank and file Republicans are so willing to allow the liberal establishment a victory over trump up charges. This is pure race baiting.

Should Lott decide to resign from the Senate and the leftie Daschlites are handed control again, this will be a dark day for conservatives and Republicans. The political reality will be catastrophic for the GOP.

No, Lott was not in the call. Of course, Lott has not taken the opportunity to say that he will not resign from the senate. That is probably something he should do at some point, if he wants to try to win this thing. Otherwise, senators will be asked if they supported Lott because he blackmailed them. That cannot stand. In short, Lott's failure to do so, would be an indication that he knows the jig is up, and just wants to keep folks guessing, so that they have to sweat for awhile.

Which makes it kinda weird why Nickles would suggest caucusing in the first place without the votes to oust Lott...

Well this gets to the issue of, when is an apology accepted, and when is it not enough?

When it is insufficient, insincere and inept.

He apparently made that threat. See #541

Hmm, Lott might regret trying to play hardball with W. Lott's going to lose that one...just a hunch.

Is politics to you about being thought of by yourself and others as morally superior? Are you a preening peacock?

He wants Lott dumped. He probably realizes that he is unlikely to get the crown. But maybe he might get some perks for being the hatchet man from the guy who is.
