I would think the worlds leading expert on what Lott meant would be Lott.If you have followed Lott's Apology Tour, you should have a pretty solid understanding that Lott doesn't get it at all. He is apologizing because he was told he should. He doesn't think he said anything wrong--yet he has never said what he meant.

Lott's arrogance just will not let him believe that he is vulnerable.
Yesterday he was at the head of one of the most powerful legislative bodies in the world. Today, people are calling for his head.
All this time he is jumping up and down saying you do not know to whom you are speaking to in such a manner.
Total denial.

He didn't even appear in person until the President slammed him. Until then, he was giving phoned-in, tepid apologies. Just as in everything else, he was spineless. Paul Gigot of the Wall Street Journal says the Senate Republicans deserve a new vote for ML. I agree. If Lott stays as ML, I think we lose in 04.

I saw Lott making his effusive remarks to Thurmond and interpreted them as stupid, insensitive, typical running-off-at-the-mouth Lott. He is NOT the Mouth of the South, and those remarks, meant most likely to flatter this 100 yo man, were vastly inappropriate, ESPECIALLY coming from Lott's position as ML.
The outcry, remember, started w/Jessie Jackson, who is an expert in using the racist epithet every chance he gets. Lott gave him and dems that chance.
My dissatisfaction w/Lott pre-dates his PRESENT thoughtless remarks. He IS and has been INEFFECTUAL as ML.....strangling the House Managers and sharing the power w/the dems to mention only a few. Lott wants to be liked too much to take the hard stands that he must in order to be the Rep leader in the Senate.
