Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position.

Jonathan Karl said three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," but that the majority still support Lott and want him to continue as Leader.

This is about destroying a human being.

This is the link Deport provided that appears to be the law on the subject (Oregon, TX, and PA are recent states that had special elections for resigning Senators). From glancing at it, it looks to me like there would have to be a special. But I will read it more carefully later. Deport, what does it look like to you? When would there be an election to replace Lott?

If Lott dilly dallys and waits until the Senate reconvenes, Musgrove doesn't have to call the special election until the next MS general election which is in November 2003.

No, no. Not true. The exception in the law about occuring in a year in which a general election occurs such as 2002 is predicated upon the vacancy occuring prior to the election. Even if it occured Dec 31, 2002. The governor would be required to hold special election in March 2003.

Even if Lott did say this, everyone knows that when you negotiate, you start from an extreme position and move towards a middle ground.
