LOTT THREATENS TO QUIT THE SENATE IF FORCED FROM LEADERSHIP
Newsnight with Aaron Brown | 12/13/2002 | Jonathan Karl

Posted on 12/13/2002 7:26:54 PM PST by sinkspur

Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position.

Jonathan Karl said three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," but that the majority still support Lott and want him to continue as Leader.

Well if he is not going to use blackmail, real or implied, then he should step down. Then all of you worried that he would completely quit the senate and allow the dem gov to appoint another dem, should not decry us harping for him to step aside.

My plan? Hmmmm...

First, I would take this issue away from Democrats. If anything is going to happen to Lott, it needs to come from Republicans and no one else. Republicans also need to unite behind Lott, which can be done by saying, yeah, his remarks were stupid and wrong, but also state that the man is not a racist. The Dems are the ones who have equated Lott’s remarks with racism. And the Republicans have let them because they are scared to death to address the issue.

Second, continue talking to Lott to make him see the bigger picture. Work with him and acknowledge that he's in the catbird seat, but also have him agree to the bigger picture of taking the 'racist' issue away from Democrats and fight the stereotype of 'Republicans are racists' by directly and forcefully challenging Democrats outlandish allegations. Once he sees the big picture and understands that him being challenged for the leadership role is part of this process, have other Republicans challenge his leadership role and win, but give Lott the chair of any committee he wants. Broker a deal where his state may get more pork. Honestly, there are so many ways that Republicans could get Lott to accept a committee chair and not quit the Senate. But they have to actually think about it first, without giving knee-jerk reactions.

Third, mount a national, combined effort by all Republicans to directly challenge, refute, and abolish the 'Republicans are racists' stereotype by giving a clear and accurate model of the history of segregation, as well as revealing the double-standard that current Democrat Senators (Byrd, etc.) are spewing. This is key in getting more blacks to look at the Republican Party as an alternative to the Democrats. Combine this with the Dems obvious attempt to regain power and reveal their true motive for wanting Lott gone. If the Dems are digging into Lott’s past for ‘patterns of behavior’, then Republicans need to also expose their true motive as well as their own double-standard. If they were truly concerned about racism, folks like Byrd and Shaprton would not be part of their party. And I’d hammer away on this point until I sounded like a broken record.

I consider myself an optimistic person. And the Lott remarks are a great opportunity for Republicans everywhere to address an issue they have been dodging for years. It's time to set the record straight. For the past two years, Republicans have been successful in taking away key issues from the Democrats. Segregation and racism absolutely must be the one in the next two years that Republicans champion and make their own.

We’ve been saying for years that Republicans need to play hardball. Right now, it seems that Lott- the one who has been said to not have a spine- is the only one playing the game.

It’s time for all Republicans to step up to the plate and knock this issue out of the park.

No, we want someone playing hardball for our conservative causes. Not self-serving reasons that Lott might now be playing hardball.

Our cause: Yes. Childish tamtrum to save his position: No.

What evidence do you have of a childish tantrum?

>>Not optimal, but we cannot lose the Senate.

Cross out Senate and replace with White House and you've achieved the mentality of the Clinton defenders during the impeachment trial.

Lott's bluffing, he's been a member of Congress for 30 years. He expects to leave Capitol Hill in a casket. Even if Lott is serious about resigning his seat and throwing it to the Democrays, our party's integrity is worth more a US Senate seat.

...but if I know the Dems .. it's just a matter of time before they do something and change the headlines

Excellent point. Hope you are correct.

My father is not like the people that you outlined in your post. He has never served a day in jail, much less prison; he has been married to my mother coming up on half a century; he has suffered discrimination but has never been embittered by it.

You just made the case for #861. Thanks.

I am offended that he is now blackmailing the party to save his dumbass.

Blackmail? LOL. You guys are hilarious. The anti-Lottites line up with the race baiters on the firing squad and then you become morally indignant when he fires back.

Too freaking much.

The blacks chose what drinking fountain you could drink from. The blacks chose what seats were yours on the bus. The blacks chose what school your babys could go to.

Your complaining about a choice of drinking fountains? Where someone wants to sit on a freaking bus? You better read #861 again if you think this is a big improvement. Take a walk as a well dressed young black man down through the mean streets of America.

Try the senseless murder districts if you dare where good black families live in f-ing constant fear for their lives, and tell me to my face how much better off blacks are today than 50 years ago.

Drinking fountains? Seats on busses?

Come back to reality Blunt. This time read 861 slow.

So you were not saying that blacks had it better under segregation?

The only thing I know about, for sure, is the Lott's words and actions. The rest is all window dressing and for supposition. This is being played out between Senate members, the WH and the Lott, behind the scenes.

..I will be the last person here to wave a pom-pom for Lott...

One of the funnier lines I've heard in this whole sorry mess.

i agree with you. why doesn't character count with lott?

any person of character would, first, not make those remarks; but second, given that he made them, resign.

it's a lack of humility.

We need a running list of reasons not to just the Lott from a conservative, Constitutionist perspective.

1 - The Lott abrogated his responsibilities because he was 4 votes short, as it stood, in the Senate during xxxlinton's Impeachment trial.
2 - The Lott bent over to the RATS and brought a new 'power-sharing' arrangement to the Senate
3 - The Lott wed himself to the infamous xxxlinton triangulator
4 - The Lott incredibly brought us all back to the good old days of segragation and even suggested that had the politics of the Dixiecrats won, we would all be better for it.
Next?

I have a Dream. Where a Senate Majority Leader is judged on the content of his character and effectiveness, and is subsequently asked to join the back benches across the aisle from Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy. Where the GOP is then free to nuke the holy crap out of Democrats and hoist them on their own petards.

And I have a Nightmare. Where Trottsky is allowed to resume Sleeper duties for the ‘Rats, who constantly wave a bulging FBI file at him from the back of the room. And as the price of his continued existence as Senate Majority Leader, who then OVERTLY sabotages any remaining principles his party stands for, catering to a vile ‘Ratpack of pirates managing the race-based spoils system that they’ve managed to infiltrate into our government.

It is our choice….
