When Mugabe started the so-called third Chimurenga (aka "hondo yenzara" (war of hunger)) there were about 50,000 whites in Zimbabwe.

There are now about 30,000 whites in Zimbabwe.

The rest have gone into exile.

There were about 4,500 members of the Commercial Farmers' Union, running about 6,000 farms.

There are now about 600 farms still in their owners' possession, and many of those have either had parts confiscated or have been forced to stop production. Eviction notices are still being served.

Mugabe's threats merely make explicit what had been implicit throughout the Third Chimurenga.

Mugabe is running out of whites to threaten.

His thugs are now turning to urban businesses, threatening and beating the distributers of staple food and goods because they are reluctant to sell at below their costs.

So, as predicted, the next targets are the Indians and other Asians, to be closely followed by the Ndebele.

I am afraid that the Third Cimurenga, which has truly become hondo yenzara, albeit in a different context than originally intended by the term, is about to become another Gukurahundi.

Tyrants need scapegoats. When Mugabe runs out of whites and Asians, there are always the Ndebele.
