To be honest, Lott should have been replaced a very long time ago.

I've never understood why his senate colleagues selected him to be their leader to begin with.

Is it me, or can his comments be made to mean something else as well. Sure, Thurmond was a racist back in his day but he did evolve over time. And he had other planks when he ran for president: State's Rights, a low federal tax burden and a low balanced federal budget. Could it not be assumed he may have been referring to these? I am no fan of Lott, but I would rather be boiled in hot oil then see him buckle under this rat-baited hypocritical baloney. Furthermore, I have been wondering if what he meant is look at the mess desegregation has left our public school system in. Bussing has been a total failure. IMO, desegregation of our schools has NOT been the cureall it was touted.
