Wolf Blitzer said word has come down from the White House that Trent Lott should not resign as Senate Majority Leader and that his apologies are good enough.
Nothing on what the Republican National Committee might say tomorrow..

If Karl can pull this one off, he deserves a place besides Lee Atwater in the pantheon of great GOP strategists..
Yeah, but not to the point that he feels humiliated.
He might then resign the Senate. That would make things very difficult for us.
This has to be very gentle and indirect. Bush did what he had to do; now that he's done it, perhaps Republicans will rally around Lott to limit the damage.

Bush Calls Lott's Remarks 'Offensive'
Thursday, December 12, 2002 WASHINGTON — President Bush on Thursday slammed comments made by Sen. Trent Lott last week, calling them "offensive" and saying they "do not reflect the spirit of our country."

Earlier in the day, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that "the president does not think that Lott should resign" from his majority leader post, which he is scheduled to take over next month.

Privately, White House officials said the comments by Bush, Fleischer and Lott were orchestrated to distance Bush and his party from Lott's remarks while giving the senator a chance to retain his leadership post. It's now up to Lott and his fellow senators to decide whether he should retain his position, said one Bush adviser.
Senator Lott made a comment that inadvertantly sounded like he was advocating segregationist polices at this late date. If anyone believes that was truly his intent, they don't understand politics or Trent Lott. Jessie Jackson, Democrats and others have been quick to attack Lott knowing full well that he is not a racist.
The Republicans have known for years that Democrat Senator Byrd was a member of the Klu Klux Klan. They haven't played the race card. They listened to Bill Clinton heap praise upon Democrat Senator Fulbright from Arkansas who used to be an avowed segregationist.
The Republicans have accepted Jessie Jackson's explanation of why he called New York Haimie Town. They did not ask him to resign.
This politics of personal destruction is somewhat humorous to watch. A man who is known to have used the "N" word was their latest President. I don't remember any of thier ranks demanding he retire from politics. In fact he still campaigns for many of them.
It's time the Democrats owned up to their own problems, determined to resolve them and quite pointing their fingers at everyone else.
Former KKK member Democrat Senator Byrd is a sitting member of the US Senate today. Does anyone think David Duke should be in the Senate of the United States? The Republicans don't. That ought to tell you something.

This is why he believed Thurmond should have been elected...not his segregation stance per se.
This is why the Dems are pushing for his ouster. They want a weaker Majority Leader.
