Mexican ambulance drivers are transporting hospital patients unable to pay for medical care or emergency-room services in their country to facilities in the United States, where their treatment is mandated by federal law, authorities said yesterday.

The border crossings have been reported from Brownsville, Texas, to Douglas, Ariz., and involve Mexican ambulance companies whose drivers have been instructed by hospital officials in Mexico to take ailing and uninsured patients to the United States, the authorities said.

The only way I see any help coming, or any way to enforce the law, is for the hospitals to voluntarily shut down or shut down their urgent care and ERs. I just don't see any other way out of it. Even a little money from the feds would just keep them alive a little longer.

The kindest thing these hospitals could do is shut down, create a big stink, and draw attention to the issue.

I'm afraid Bush & the GOP has painted themselves into a corner on the border issue. Anything he or the GOP does to fix this problem will be trumped up to ridiculous heights ('refusing emergency care to hispanics') and used as a wedge issue between his party and that holy grail of modern politics, the "latino" vote.

They should NEVER have let things get this far out of control.

And this whole Trent Lott idiocy that the hypocritical left is beating the GOP down with is going to exacerbate the border disaster. Bush and co. are going to pay even more special attention now to making sure they don't offend the "undocumented workers" sneaking across the borders in the middle of the night searching for the American dream.

I wonder how these ambulances are driving across exactly. I know at some time they are encountered by the Border Patrol. I wonder if the Agents are told not to stop ambulances. This type of thing has never happened in my Sector. However, we are not allowed to determine alienage on a sick or injured illegal. We have to call EMS. Once EMS takes them to the hospital and they get treatment they are free to stay in the US. Determining that a Mexican is illegal is one of the quickest ways to the beach.

Invasion was a great book and Michelle was accurate with the information regarding immigration enforcement procedures. In Mortal Danger by Tom Tancredo is even better regarding the cultural, social, and economical destruction being caused by massive illegal immigration into the United States. A DEFINITE must read as well!

That was five years ago.

Let’s be careful. Being against illegal immigration does not mean being heartless to needy people in an acute crisis.

We can have a treaty with Mexico to treat and get reimbursed.

Ambulances should not be allowed to cross the border without being pre-approved by the American hospital. The hospital should be required to keep paperwork for auditing to demonstrate that no welfare medical cases are admitted.

"Once EMS takes them to the hospital and they get treatment they are free to stay in the US"

So all the illegal immigrant wannabes need to do is fake an illness for EMS (or cross the border with EMS when they have a genuine need for free health care) and we get to bring them across the border for free, release them into our society, and let them have fun....... yeah, another great set-up for protecting our borders and tax dollars....

" You say illegal aliens are setting fire to forests and fields along the border to
distract U.S. Border Patrol Agents to make their crossing easier, and throwing
Molotov cocktails at US agents’ vehicles, and setting fire to their observation
posts? "

"I'm the Homeland Security Chief. What do you want me to do about it? "

An important point to ponder-----not only did we, the people, slaughter amnesty, BUT we also beat back the Mexican government (which was heavily invested in amnesty).

WE hold the winning cards, so we get to decide the rules of the game. WE DEMAND that Mexico stop aiding and abetting the invasion..........or else.

It's an outrage that US citizens are socked with the costs of subsidizing illegal Mexican citizens, and are forced to put-up a multi-billion dollar fence, and hire law enforcement to keep these invaders off our land.

We get all the grief AND the bills---Mexico gets off scot-free. That has to end.

Keep in mind that the US (that's us, the taxpayers) provides the nuclear defense umbrella to protect Mexico, so that Mexico has no real defense expenses. We need to let Mexico know that we will cut off every penny in US aid unless they do something about border security.

Mexico can well-afford it. Mexico is a wealthy oil-producing neighbor and has eleven "Forbes" billionaires, more than all but eight other nations. Mexico has more billionaires than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland or Taiwan. It also has more than 85,000 millionaires. It's telecommunications king---Carlos Slim has displaced Bill Gates as the world's richest man.

According to a CNN report, Mexico sits on oil reserves worth about $400 billion, but Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, doesn't have the investment funds to tap those reserves, and Mexico's Congress refuses to allow foreign investment in Pemex. Some observers say this is due to Mexican gov't corruption, and the obsession to line their own pockets.

Adding insult to injury American taxpayers are subsidizing foreign aid transfers to Mexico from its lettuce pickers and hamburger flippers here. The percentage corrupt Mexican politicans are getting from this $30-40 billion bundle must be considerable (or else it would be stopped). America should mandate proof for all cash transfers out of the US and/or force all transferring agencies -- banks, credit unions, Amex, Western Union to collect a substantial withholding tax -- 50%, say -- on every unexplained foreign remittance.

The government of Mexico---with all of its oil revenue----needs to be pitching in to protect the borders (AND taking care of its own people, not "outsourcing' them as wards of American taxpayers). Mexico sloughs off its citizens on US taxpayers. We provide then social services, health plans, and Social Security that Mexico will not provide.

Pretty soon US retirees will be on the "Mexican retirement plan"---selling sticks of gum on street corners.

Being a native San Diegan (former San Diegan) I can tell you one, this patient dumping at the border and getting an ambulance ride to the hospital has gone on long before NAFTA. They also dump their school children and we pay for their education long before NAFTA. The Otay Water District has a water program with Tijuana called “cross connect” where we help them with their infrastructure needs, our fire departments in San Diego respond below the border on occasion and San Diego Police Department has been known to help train their police officers. All of this at taxpayers cost.
