I have lost much respect for many of my fellow freepers reading the responses to the articles concerning Trent Lotts supposedly racist comments. I cannot believe the number of people on this forum who think that he should not only leave the leadership of the majority, but resign from the senate as well. Some are just piling on the call for Lott to resign based on their dislike for Lotts lack of vision and commitment to conservative principles. However the others are arguing that he must leave because he is too much of a liability to the party in the coming elections. Since when did so many of us become such a bunch of hypocritical cowards? During the impeachment trial it was we principled conservatives who wanted to skewer Lott for ditching the Clinton trial because he felt that it was too much of a liability to our party. Four years later it is now many of us who are now too afraid to confront the culture of political correctness. Does anyone here really believe that Lotts gaff was anything more than an innocent mistake? If not, then why are you forgetting the call to stand up for what is right irregardless of how others may think of us that you used over and over again against Lott in 1998-9? Are we going to force Lott out for political expediency or are we going to fight against this overly sensitive society where a minor mistake is enough to ruin someones life and career. If we choose the former than we are no better than the senate republicans who refused to convict Clinton because they feared consequences in the next election.
If you're one of those expecting Lott to resign from the Senate, ask yourself if a slip-of-the-mouth is enough of a crime to endure another two years of Daschle as the majority leader. Mississippis Democratic governor would appoint Lotts replacement. This new 50-50 split would then give Chafee or one of the other rinos the perfect excuse and oppurtunity to bolt the racist Republican party.
I'm certainly no Kool-Aid drinking Lottbot.
I think Dubya should address the issue, just like the 'Rats are calling for.
First, he should express his empathy for those who may have truly been offended by Lott's gaffe.
Next he should objective observe that Lott was merely honoring a 100 year-old-man on his birthday, and has sufficiently apologized for to those he may have inadvertently offended.
Finally, he should express extreme sadness that there are still those who are so emotionally disturbed and twisted by this event, that they can't see past their own bigotry and hatred to accept the gracious apology that Lott has extended.
Except when it comes to politics.
Do you honestly think if the situation were reversed the rats would call on one of their own to resign?
In fact, when have you EVER HEARD of a rat calling for another one to resign?
Instead of apologizing, Lott ought to be calling for the real racists in the Senate, Hollings and Byrd, to step down.
He should get up and say that he will resign when they do and tell the rats and the media to go to hell.
It is sad indeed.
I believe you are exaggerating if you meant to suggest that very many FReepers feel that Lott should resign from the Senate.
