Once read a sci-fi novel that depicted the entire Earth as one continuous homogenous strip mall shunned by vacationers who sought genuine cultures. No matter where one landed the same chain entities would be there to blast you with their sameness. It's definitely happening.

Agreed. Just poke around on FR and ask about this issue. Most will beat their chests about how wonderful "free-enterprise" is. WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, Albertson's, Chilis, Domino's, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Joe's Crab Shack, etc. etc. etc...

Teens don't cut lawns, deliver papers, or work in the local stores - Mexicans do. Every neighborhood is slapped up within a few months and all the homes look the same.

Where I live in North Dallas area, there is a town of 55K where every house looks almost identical, it has every chain restaurant known to man, all the cars are the same, and almost everyone is not from here - Flower Mound, TX.

A friend from the USN grew up here and said that Flower Mound was a wide spot in the road ten years ago. If you have ever seen the movie "Edward Scissorhands," it's like that, but with big brick houses.

The sameness is numbing. But it's progress, and that's what's important - ask any FReeper.

Fred is right. American independance is not compatable with being a low end employee of a mega chain corporation. NYC controls Flower Mound more than Flower Mound does.
