Thurmond was a Democrat, then ran as a Dixiecrat on an explicitly segregationist platform.

I was referring to Lott's statement. I was listening with one ear when I heard it the first time and I didn't relate the comment to Blacks or segregation. Seemed to me he was merely trying to say something nice about Strom; making mention that he had once been a pres. candidate.

That's how I took it. Didn't say I didn't think it was a dumb thing to say but I think it is a leap to tie it to blacks. I think even Lott is smart enough not to say it if he had thought about it in racial terms.

Maybe you should think about jumping to conclusions, a la, Jesse and Al.
