Regardless of what Truman had done earlier in life, he was actively promoting legal equality between the races in 1948. The idiotic spin that he was just as bad as Thurmond is desperation talking. Lott may or may not have been talking about other issues, but it sure sounds like he was talking about race. Either that's exactly what he meant, or his political instincts are so poor he couldn't tell how it was going to sound. Either way, he's unfit to be Majority Leader.
