I've always wondered about Kwanzaa. And now I don't feel that little twinge of guilt for a call I once made to a local radio show a couple years ago when the topic of Kwanzaa came up. Even though I didn't know anything about Kwanzaa at the time, my view of it was that it was just another one of those things that certain minority groups clung to for the purpose of 1) pretending they have something that makes them culturally superior to the Mainstream "white" culture 2) covering up their sense of inferiority to the mainstream "white" culture. I'm not saying these people have a reason to feel inferior to the mainstream. But I think they are seriously kidding themselves when they think they have a cultural edge by identify with a culture they think is older and more valid than mainstream America. Chinese- and Mexican- Americans do it. They cling to the primitive traditions and culture of China or Mexico. And they are seriously prejudiced against whitey. Yet if they were to go back to China or Mexico or Africa, the real Chinese/Mexicans/Africans would think they were really weird and confused Americans. So the irony is that, by trying to adhere to old traditions, they are actually creating a new hybrid subculture that perpetuates their isolation from mainstream America yet makes them nothing like the culture they are pretending to embrace. Take a La Raza loving Mexican and send him back to Me-hi-co and there is a very good chance the real Mexicans are going to think he's just a little bit nutty and not the least bit Mexican. Same with a person who practices Kwanzaa.

I appreciate your position but didn't know this was a crusade. I wrote a song last year and put up this post this year.

I didn't realise they were of the feeling that they were superior in any way.The blacks I know that celebrate Kwanzaa seem to just be celebrating their heritage, which I feel is OK.We all have traditions and holidays we identify with, and if they are not in sync with the Christmas traditions, they are entitled to celebrate anyway they wish.I have never heard a Kwanzaa celebrant assert that they are more valid than others. From what I have seen it's a wonderful celebration season for them.Different strokes for different folks and I'm not about to knock their holiday. If they enjoy it and their not hurting anyone in the process,I say let em' carry on.

Sounds to me like theauthor of this article is a playa hata...Those things may be true about Karenga but that doesn't take away from the fact that he has stood up and fought for the rights of Black people for many years. This guy states that Kwanzaa is not celebrated in Africa--That just goes to show his ignorance..What does this have to do with Africa? He borrowed certain aspects from different cultures in Africa...who hasn't done that...People have been stealing from Africa for centuries--from Religion, art, social structure et al...
I see he failed to mention how the FBI and it's Cointelpro operations in the 60's was used to undermine each and every Black leader and organization in the United States. None of those facts are mentioned nor the fact that the FBI would use voice and hand writing experts to send threat letters and messages to Black Panthers in the name of the US organization and vice versa. It's funny how people always point to the negative when it comes to our Black men who stand up and fight, and it's our fault cause the main stream is always trying to appoint someone as the "Black leader"...that is so racist and this jerk doesn't even know it.!
