That has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever read here, and I've been around for a while.

Here's what he said: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

He specified "when he ran for president". That was 1948.

So, what year was Lott's state carried by Thurmond? That's right, 1948.

And if the other states had joined Mississippi in voting for Thurmond, when would he have become president? Yep, January 1949.

At no point do the 60s come into it.

Lott should be able to say whatever the hell he wants... this is after all, America, not to mention, he will take responsibility for his statements. Racist? Segragationist? Let him speak, and answer for it... not be P.C.'d into resigning... thats B.S.!!!

What a Jerk Jessie!

Calling Lott a "Confederate" raises his currency in the South. Most southern Blacks are Democrats anyway.

Everybody knows Thurmond's background, and they also know what kind of man he is now.

And Lott was talking about 1948. That would be the "background", in case you haven't figured that out on your own.

This is media-generated bullshit, and everybody knows it.

When Lott said Mississippi was proud of going for Thurmond, there was cheering.

When he went on to say that we "wouldn't have had all these problems over these years" if Thurmond had been elect, the cheering fell silent, and there was an audible gasp.

Was the immediate reaction caused by the media, sink?

And anyway, if the media was trying to "generate" anything, they'd be covering it a lot more.

"Watch for Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., Miss Donna Brazile, Mrs. Maxine Waters, and Mr. James Carville to begin a weeklong boast of the reelection of LA's Landrieu and the new Democrat House member, Mr. Alexander."

Yeah, I didn't hear anyone bitchin' about ol' maxine waters racial comments during the Rodney King verdict... hell, she said on national t.v., "why are y'all burning your own neighborhoods? Go to the white man's neighborhood!"
Not one word demanding her sorry a$$ resignation...

Lott should be able to say whatever the hell he wants...

Not as the Senate Majority Leader! He's the representative of the Republican party! If he came out saying Heil Hitler, we should raise taxes and confiscate all privately-owned firearms, I doubt you would be so forgiving. If he said, "I love Bill Clinton, and I think of myself more as a Democrat than a Republican" you would want him to step down.

I'm not questioning his Constitutional freedom of speech, I'm criticizing one of his remarks. As a representative of the Republican party, he's got to act with a certain amount of decorum, and if he can't handle that, he shoudl get the sack. And if he's going to go spouting off with ideas like that, which go counter to the Republican philosophy, he shouldn't be renewed as majority leader.

Lott should step down as leader if for no other reason he's a traitor to the party and the Constitution he took an oath to uphold, against foreign and domestic.

However, Justme Jackin should admit he's no reverand and get some semblance of a clue. What a looooooooser.

Are you in favor of racial segregation?

No, but virtually every campus black activist today is.

Go look at a dining hall on any campus today at lunch or dinner, and see how the (liberal, PC) students SEGREGATE THEMSELVES!

I'm sorry, but bringing up the views of Algores dad is simply idiotic. One can't help who their parents are or what their parents believe. And for that matter, his dads views weren't out of the line as most of the white south were "racist segregationists" at the time.

It is relevant in that Al Gore has lied about it several times. I found out about Gores fathers racism, not from conservatives, but from a Bill Bradley interview. Gore has re-made his fathers image, playing revionist history. When Al JR decided to play his father up, then his fathers past became relevant. Also to note, he voted against the civil rights act.

This campaign against Lott is going to blow up in their faces. All Lott said is that Thurmond would have been a good president. So what? Then-president Truman was KKK. And if any current senators need to be looked at, what about KKK Byrd and his 'white ni**er' remarks? Byrd also made a marathon filibuster against a key human rights vote in the 60s. It's just liberal desperation and hypocracy, as usual. The rats were predominantly the anti-civil rights party right up until the late '60s.

Jesse's right. Trent Lott should explain himself or he should step down. What he said was vile and inexcusable and Bush should demand he step down if he won't go on his own. There's no excuse for what Trent Lott said.

Oh my. You really drank the koolaide. Lott didn't say a dad gummed thing except that Thurmond would make a good president back in 48, when the incumbent, Truman, was former KKK. Truman might have stayed in the KKK, except he didn't like their attitude toward Catholics. Enjoy your newfound friendship with the seed-sowing reverend.

Jesse didn't give a rat's rear end about the perjury, obstruction of justice, but if you praise Strom Thurmond you need to be run out of town. Who does Jesse Jackson think he is?

Yes, Al Gore, Jr., has depicted the late Al Gore, Sr., as a civil rights supporter who exuded "compassion" and "care" for the dispossessed. While Al, Sr., joined Senators Stennis and Eastland of MS in voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is likely that he wanted to vote for the bill. However, Al, Sr., was running for reelection in 1964 and faced a strong Goldwater Republican opponent. therefore, he took the expedient path and voted against the bill on grounds that it interfered with property rights. Goldwater would have won TN had he not vowed to "break up and sell" FDR's beloved Tennessee Valley Authority. NO TN Republicans has ever taken an anti-TVA stand to my knowledge. People in TN love the TVA.

Who does Jesse Jackson think he is?

Jesse, Sr., is the father of a Chicago congressman. Jesse, Sr., considers Strom Thurmond a closet segregationist. Jesse, Sr., was born in SC and has loathed the Thurmond success and legacy. Jesse, Sr., is so rarely challenged on his "points" that he feels he can say anything he wishes, and "whitey" must take stock.
