Say Terrell gets 65 percent of the white vote and white voters are 75 percent of today's Louisiana electorate (.65 x .75 = .49). That gives her 49 percent of the total vote and she can get just 5 percent of the 25 percent of the voters who are black and still win (.05 x .25 = .013, when added to .49 means Terrell gets slightly over 50 percent of the vote). The three key variables are thus: 1) the relative turnout of whites and blacks; 2) the percentage majority Terrell can muster among white voters; and, 3) the percentage Terrell can get among black voters, even if its in single digits.
