Any reference by the President to Islam "bring[ing] hope and comfort to over 1 billion people worldwide," OR "Islam affirm [ing] God's justice" is a blatant lie. Unless you happen to think otherwise...

Actually, 1 billion Muslims believe that Islam brings hope and comfort to them. So, it's not a lie; it's true.

It doesn't matter what I think. Or what you think, frankly.

Darn it, and I forgot to turn on FOX to see the position we conservatives were supposed to take on this issue. Those TV people are definitely smarter than the common folk.

Sure here is one of 100's of stories!

Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, condemned America's Christian right yesterday for propagating hatred against Muslims, in what appeared to be a coordinated White House campaign to confront anti-Islamic rhetoric from a constituency that includes some of the Bush administration's staunchest supporters.

Days after the televangelist Pat Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network that "what the Muslims want to do to the Jews is worse" than the Holocaust, Mr Powell told a gathering in Washington: "This kind of hatred must be rejected."

The escalation in anti-Muslim comments from conservative Christians includes a recent claim by Jerry Falwell, the country's leading rightwing Baptist, that the prophet Mohammed was "a terrorist".

Veteran evangelist Jimmy Swaggart followed that this week by calling Mohammed a "sex deviant" and a pervert and demanding that Muslim students in the US be expelled. "We ought to tell every other Muslim living in this nation that if you say one word, you're gone," he said.

As the likelihood grows of a war in Iraq there are strategic benefits for the White House in convincing Muslims that it would not be a war against their religion.

The administration's increased willingness to confront the Christian right reflects the Republicans' sweeping victories in last week's mid-term elections, reducing Mr Bush's reliance on the extreme fringes of his supporter base.

I will, and I'll bet the majority will think 9/11 was a Jewish conspiracy.

You won't, and I'd take that bet if I had any way to verify it.

Only idiots think 9/11 was a Jewish conspiracy. We have (and had) several "Christians" on this very website who thought the same thing.

JimRob hasn't gotten rid of all of them yet.

If you have evidence that any of these "fellow American citizens who happen to be Muslim" are entertaining similar notions, perhaps you should inform Tom Ridge.

Tom and I aren't close, but I'll drop him a Ramadan card.

Otherwise, you're just stereotyping.

Yeah, hotheaded redneck that I am, it galls me to see this nation's chief executive placating the group that spawned al-Qaida. But I'll bet every one of these peace-loving citizens howled in outrage that their co-religionists would commit such heinous crimes. No doubt it would have been acceptable for Roosevelt to have high tea with Hitler too.

Such stereotyping might lead a lurker to think you're a hotheaded redneck, and we wouldn't want them to get that notion now, would we?

Whoa, are YOU perceptive! I'm torn between having lurkers think of me as a hotheaded redneck or a simpering coward who coddles our enemies. Hmmmmmmm.

Suddenly it dawns on me that I don't give a fiddler's fart what you -- or a hypthetical lurker -- think! That makes the decision much easier.

Hmmmm. I didn't see anything in that article that condemns all Christians. He was refering to Pat Robertson and the like. And if you think all Christians are like Robertson, I've got news for you- they aren't.

When I object to Bush's behavior I am not asking Bush to "attack all Muslims." However, his behavior with regards to Islam is just silly. He can warn against violence against peaceful Muslims without trying to claim, all evidence to the contrary, that Islam is "peaceful." He doesn't have to engage in their false religious practices either. I think as a Christian he has an obligation not to.

You forgot to address the other quote by Dubya: "Islam affirms God's justice and insists on man's moral responsibility."

Have you now become on of them cover-all-the-bases bi-religious Catholic-Muslims, Sink?

Bush is not just showing respect, he is endorsing their religion as legitimate and equal to others. It is not.

Bush is doing psy ops to try to prevent that and make Bin Laden's job harder.

That Bush is a tactical genius, isn't he? He's almost God-like in his ability to formulate plans that transcend human understanding. I'm humbled before his quisling ... er, visionary ... plan.

Then they are ignoring the Koran. Don't sound like very religious people to me.

Really? Ignoring commands to kill other people sounds very religious to me.

Some "Christians" think I'm going to hell because I drink. Should I be more afraid of American Muslims who ignore parts of the Koran, or of Christians who want to put me in hell because I drink a glass of Cabernet with dinner?

Is Bush lying?

Truthful you will join the military and fight the half a billion Muslims?

I doubt it.

PoWell >>"This kind of hatred must be rejected."

Which is precisely what Bush could do by saying the magic words, "radical islamis" or "militant islamis".

Single out the nutcases from all the mythical others.

The sugarcoating is wearing rather thin.

And why not invite the imams to the XMAs tree ceremony so they can participate in a national ritual.

Bet they wouldn't have showed.

Powell Creates Stir Among Christians Again

Secretary of State Colin Powell is making enemies within the Church again. This time the criticism is over his verbal attacks on those who disagree with Islam.

Secretary of State Colin Powell says he's trying to expand programs that would bring Muslim political and religious leaders to the United States in an attempt to bridge the ideological gap between Western culture and Islam. But some of his comments have caused quite a stir.

During a recent speech to a gathering of Muslim Americans, Powell said, "We must not listen to the siren song of the bigots, extremists who cloak themselves in false spirituality in an attempt to divide and weaken us."

Powell seems to be taking on social conservatives like the Rev. Jerry Falwell and Dr. Pat Robertson, who have spoken out against the dangers of Islam.

Bill Lind, of the Free Congress Foundation, isn't surprised by Powell's remarks, but he is disappointed. He believes it's Powell's vision to essentially wipe Western culture off the map.
