I've never heard of this. Is it true? Did Rush avoid military service?

It's a strange but true fact that Rush got out of serving in Vietnam because of (hold your hat), an anal cyst.

I think his draft classification was something other than 1-A, because of physical reasons. I.e., he had the akin to a medical deferment.

Got some proof to back up that claim?
To: OldCorps
This is disingenuous of the caller, because Rush isn't running for President.

I had an anal sister...she always...What?....Oh.....nevermind.

To: Freebird Forever
I think mg is correct. The only proof any of us have is what Rush has shared about the topic on his show. I haven't heard him talk about his draft status for some time, but he's been rather open about it.

It's true. Should be some articles in here on it, just run a search on 'chickenhawks'.

Rush had an "inoperable pilonidal cyst" and was considered a "disqulifying condition." (or a 1-y condition later changed to a 4-F)

Sen. John Kerry
No, no, you've got to get on the same page as all of us.
It's 'Lurch', as in the Addams Family.
To: Captainpaintball
if that's true about the pilonidal cyst, I believe it is a good enough reason to avoid service. When I was a company commander one of my pilots developed one of these. He was miserable. He did have surgery, but they have to pack the open wound with gauze constantly so it will heal from the inside out. It takes forever, and there's a high risk of infection. He was grounded for the better part of year. I really felt bad for the guy.

It seems to me this vignette shows he (Sen. Kerry) is just a spoiled rich boy. John Kerry did a tour in Viet Nam in riverine patrol boats. He came away with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Doesn't sound like a spoiled rich boy to me.

Inoperable or convenient?
To: OldCorps
Rush just talked about this a little bit more -- he explained (paraphrasing here) that the "draft-dodging" or "chickenhawk" label is being used against guys who, in many cases, would have served had their number been called or if they had been able (we do know that many guys with high numbers were never called up, others were medically disqualified, even for simple things like heart murmurs or flat feet) -- the ones who are calling "names" are most likely whiney "peacenicks" who would never, ever have served, they would have run off to Canada or gone to college, gotten married or anything they could in oreder to avoid war, they know this (in their hearts) and now they have to call others "chickenhawks" in order to "assuage their guilt" over not only not serving, but in many cases actually protesting and dissing the troops who did go over there (and dishonoring those who did serve, esp. the ones who did not make it back)

About that "spoiled rich boy', he is now, after finding the lonely rich widder Heinz. Before that he was whining about not having any money after his divorce. Also, during one of his "explorations", asked if he could use his wife's money to campaign. IMO, widder Heinz could have bought something better than John Kerry, at least someone with a personality.

If it was merely convenient, he wouldn't have been able to get out of it. They didn't disqualify you easily during the war.

It's true. Should be some articles in here on it, just run a search on 'chickenhawks'. Nobody gives a damn whether Limbaugh served in Vietnam, or whether anybody else did, for that matter. We hold those in high esteem who did serve.
You guys with your "chickenhawk" label are chicken-****.

As of late, there has been much made of "chickenhawks". If the guy had a medical reason that he could not serve, then that's that.
Heck, I heard someone at work going on about the "hawk" Rumsfeld. They were not complaining that he was a chickenhawk, just a hawk.
Where or where, was this sort of discussion when we were interjecting the US in any number of foreign entanglements in the 90's?
Believe me, even if each and every Republican had served during wartime or served in the military, the Dems would probably then ask "Well, did you serve in a Combat Arms branch?"
