It is fitting that this moron is a Fulbright scolar. J. William Fulbright was one of the most rabid anti-American, pro-Communist, Stalin apologists who ever lived.. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/1777/fulbrigt.htm

A Vanderbilt University professor has stirred outrage in Dixie by declaring that Confederates were "cowards masquerading as civilized men"

Regardless of anyone's view on the merits of one side or the other, it is idiotic to suggest that men who crossed open fields into massed cannister shot and rifle fire were "cowards". When this idiot does the same, he will have earned the right to comment upon the subject of bravery and cowardice.

Wait; wait; don't tell me! He's about 55; went to divinity school in Canada to dodge Vietnam service; lost religion as soon as the draft ended and went back to school, hiding there for life; works for the Pelosi campaign every two years; teaches hatred of America.

"A waste of skin," as the Romulans would say.

That's what Vanderbilt gets for hiring a foreigner, and a communist-lover at that.

I say kick them out of the Southeastern Conference on general principle.

"His father, an immigrant from Jamaica...his mother, an immigrant from Guyana"

...the race problems that wrack America to this day are due largely to the fact that the Confederacy was not thoroughly destroyed, its leaders and soldiers executed, and their lands given to the landless freed slaves.

He makes a good point...his ancestors in Jamaica and Guyana always used these tactics (in fact, they still do!) and the results have been fantastic. Those are great places to live. Thanks for the great advice, moron!

One may argue that my ancestors were uncivilized or barbaric, but; our village chiefs never sold us into slavery.

The people at Vanderbilt who hired this guy were morons. Regretably, Vanderbilt has been trying to use infusions of money to catch up with the Ivy League and Berkeley. Now they're going to catch a little flak for it.

He is far from a moron: he's done some pretty good work, judging by the journals where he has published. His supervisors were Birkhoff and Priestley, top people in the field.

He is not a moron but surely is a leftist extremist.

Farley's comments suffer from a common flaw of leftist rhetoric--a brain-dead extremism that distorts the truth even when the truth is on the leftists' side.

It's not enough to state accurately that the Rebs were traitors who sought to demolish the Union in order to preserve their "right" to buy and sell black people like cattle. That's a severe enough indictment for anybody, except knuckleheaded lefties who must find some way to equate the Confederacy with Nazi Germany, because that's a leftie's idea of the ultimate evil.

Of course, the Confederates were most emphatically NOT Nazis or anything nearly as bad. They didn't want to exterminate blacks; merely to own us and force us to work for them.

I wish Farley could have been more rational and thoughtful in making his point, because I agree with him to a considerable degree. This Lost Cause crap is some of the stupidest codswallop imaginable. There was nothing noble about the Southern cause. Nothing. Not a blessed thing. They were fighting to preserve an evil political and economic system. E-V-I-L, as in "axis of." The destruction of the Confederacy was the best day's work the US military ever did, next to dusting Hitler and Tojo. And frankly, if Grant and Sherman had left the leaders of the Confederacy festooning every oak tree between Washington and Richmond, it would have been no more than that lot deserved.

If they had executed all the Confederate soldiers following the war, consider:

There would be no Coca-Cola, John S. Pemberton, the guy who invented it, was a Lt. Col. in the Confederate cavalry.

There would never have been an H. L. Mencken, his father
was a Confederate soldier.

Maybe not a Mark Twain, he went west after spending a couple of weeks in a home guard unit in Missouri. I guess it would have depended on how far Prof. Farley wanted to go.

Definitely not an Ancient_Pistoll : (, I had four grandfathers who served....

It looks like Professor Farley doesn't think too highly of Nashville either:

>As it happens, I do come from the Third World--a place where, if you question the government, you could lose your job, get bomb threats and be arrested without charge--a place called Nashville, Tennessee.<

TRIPLE COWARDICE

A kind friend telephoned me last night to say, "Quick! Turn on Fox right now! There's the topic for your next column." Happily for me, I don't have television, so she described the scenario: Professor Jonathan Farley of Vanderbiltwas ranting about the Confederacy, those who fought for it, and those who still honor them. He was saying something to the effect that all those Confederates should be shot.

Memo to the Ivory Tower: most Confederates already did get shot. Didn't they teach you anything in school?

The average Johnnie Reb was poor, and didn't own slaves, and even if the Confederacy had won the war, he was going to remain poor and slaveless. What he fought for was not riches and control of other human beings; he was fighting for his homeland and way of life. It may be that some aspects of that way of life were wrong, but nonetheless he was fighting for pretty much the same reasons Americans have always fought. And he did so brilliantly, against overwhelming odds, in the face of incredible privation and hardship, never surrendering until he was completely beaten. I would like to point out to the professor that whether a man was fighting for Mr. Lincoln or to save his plantation, it took equal courage, because when the bullet, shell fragment, or bayonet found him he was going to be just as dead whatever the color of his uniform. The Rebels were fighting for America too, and if the professor cannot recognize the honor which is due them, that's because he cannot understand honor -- or America, for that matter.

There is something especially cheap about this kind of display from academics. These are people who didn't graduate and then move out into the real world; they've never really left school, just moved to the other end of the classroom, staying close to mommy's apron strings. Once they have tenure, they are set for life however shoddy their work. In academia they are insulated from the give and take of political debate, since the academic world is so uniformly leftist. No annoying conservative thought will spoil the atmosphere, because free speech is not allowed on campus. It takes no kind of integrity or backbone to be a leftist professor; today's brave academic is conservative.

Then, safe in his university, secure among like-thinking minds, he screws up the courage to attack what? An enemy who was defeated 147 years ago. Defeated by someone else's blood and sacrifice. An enemy who doesn't even exist anymore. The fatuity of such talk, coming from a man who doesn't even have to be good at his job, is breathtaking.

Cheap isn't the word for this. I call it triple cowardice.

Michael R. Bowen M.D.
