Free Republic losing its impact
Alamance Independent ^ | Unknown | Matt Maggio

What a long way Free Republic has come! From its birth in 1996 as what began as just a place where hardcore conservatives to post the latest news and analyze it, Free Republic two years later had a significant role in the neutralization of the Clintons - as it became the organizing point for enormous protests ridiculing Bill Clinton over Monicagate everywhere he went in the U.S. early in Monicagate throughout 1998. Some top liberals even blame Freepers for Al Gore's defeat.

Very early in Monicagate, Freepers brought Free Republic out of just being a sort of giant cybercafe for dissidents to talk things over - and made it into a very-effective organizing point for giant protests against liberals and liberalism, like the one in Houston at a Clinton fundraiser that not only like most greeted Clinton with hundreds of dissidents ridiculing him for his adultery and perjury, but even found a fire engine to hang a giant sign on that read "Bill Clinton Is A Four-Alarm Fraud." Freepers in Florida hung a giant sign on a cabin cruiser to float in a strategic position just offshore a fundraiser of his there. And here in North Carolina, about 30 Freepers picketed an Al Gore fundraiser in Raleigh's Volvo district in May 1999 - some dressed as Buddhist monks. The Clintons/Gore Regime just couldn't escape the conservatives from hell.

Other liberals were no luckier. The "Rosiecott" that ended Corporate America's willingness to indulge leftist politics was in large part organized on Free Republic. Freeper-organized boycotts were to Rosie O'Donnell's career what a later gay boycott was to advice-talk radio host Dr. Laura's.

But - just six years after its founding, just four years after the height of its power - Free Republic today is largely a total waste of time. As a reader commented, it isn't accomplishing anything anymore - with the giant protests against liberals formerly organized on it by Freepers over; as he agreed last week, the sole positive things it now does are to provide rapid dissemination of news, even from small-town dailies, to dissidents everywhere - and to guide dissidents to the various dissident newspapers that really are hardcore.

Some social issues are almost unmentionable on Free Republic today. More than one Freeper has griped that posted articles on immigration often just disappear. Other Freepers have been just blacklisted from Free Republic - for offending the sensibilities of founder Jim Robinson or the small clique under him that largely actually runs Free Republic now.

Today, Free Republic is every bit as handicapped as founder Jim Robinson - but by another problem. To all too many Freepers now, anyone calling themselves a Republican is God's brother - and cannot be criticized, no matter how Clintonesque their views on many social issues may be. And to all too many Freepers now, Pres. Bush really is God - uncriticizable, no matter what.

To make Free Republic great again, a number of things have to happen. First, all involved - from ordinary Freepers to "JimBob" himself - have to accept that having an (R) next to one's name doesn't make a politician beyond criticism. Second, all involved must also accept that Pres. Bush isn't God. And then, all Freepers must commit to doing again what made Free Republic great - hounding any politician at odds with Red Nation's masses on social issues; if that means picketing Pres. Bush everywhere he goes if he hints at amnesty for illegal aliens or tacit support of racial quotas, that's what it takes.

Free Republic didn't become great by being a Chinese-style "Democracy Wall" for dissidents to post articles from "mainstream" newspapers to and then discuss them. It can only became great again the same way it originally got great.

By the way, exactly how does one breed like RINOS?

Put your left foot in,
Your left foot out,
Your left foot in,
And shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey
And turn yourself around.

Now put your right foot in,
Your right foot out,
Right foot in
And shake it all about.
And then you do the Hokey Pokey
Turn yourself around,
That's what it's all about.

You put your...

Blind loyalty is as big a curse as blind hatred.  Both should be avoided.

Common sense seems in short supply.

and how many listen to Rush but are really hearing from Freerepublic?

20 million a day.

Now add Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Fox News and many others and look you have 80 million a day hearing what FReepers have to say!

If you splinter your group over single issues then all you will have is infighting and nothing will ever get accomplished. Of course this may be what you want. Since you obviously have no handicaps, why don't you start your own web site and post all your rules on thought behavior and have everyone adhere to them?

The controversial quote from your website seems to indicate you favor separation of races as far as marriage is concerned, i.e. Caucasians should marry Caucasians, Africans should marry Africans, Asians should marry Asians, etc.

Nevertheless, I cannot find a quote suggesting you are in favor of discrimination against people of different races, on the job market or university admissions.

It seems that you would feel comfortable working with people from different races, or conducting any other business with them. You only draw the line on interracial marriage.

Is this correct?

I'm really sorry that you feel that way, and I'll grant that there are a few FReepers that may fall into the category you talk about, but that said, I think they are very few and not all that hard to ignore. I think the fact that you were able to post this, particularly in insulting the owner of the site, speaks volumes to refute your claim. I have found Jim to be most gracious most of the time. He has strong opinions and I think a bit of a temper, but he is entitled to his opinions as we all are and when his temper has caused him to act in haste, he is quick to make amends from everything I have seen.

I have seen widely varying opinions on this forum and an incredible amount of tolerance and as long as FReepers are respectful there are not usually any real insurmountable problems. Posts get pulled sometimes. We live with it. There is usually a good reason, but I haven't seen anybody get banned outright except for being a disruptor, and they should be banned. Of course, sometimes its kinda fun when Jim lets them stay long enough for us to play cat and mouse with them awhile.

And as far as being ineffective and doing nothing, I take that remark kinda personally. Free Republic has had a tremendous impact on me as far as getting involved and trying to make a difference. I doubt there's another group of people anywhere who are more committed to America than FReepers and there are many of us working hard, doing everything we can to help carry out the mission of this website in our daily lives. Or maybe you don't see it because you're not doing anything yourself right now. I don't mean that as a putdown. We all have our phases and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just that when you're actively involved in a particular effort yourself you are much more likely to be in touch with that effort.

Free Republic is more than just staging protests, although we still do that when called for. I have no doubt that some of the letter writing campaigns launched by FReepers have swayed decisions at all levels and have at times brought issues to the public's attention. And what about the incredible labors of love we see every day on the "Canteen", "Some of FR's Finest" and the "Daily Prayer" threads? Are you saying that is "nothing"? And what about FReepers like cascadians and tankgurrrl, who launched an effort here on FR to bring attention to the abduction of Alice Donovan by the two Kentucky prison escapees and carried out that effort so far as to get flyers posted throughout the area alerting anyone who might have any knowledge and keeping that information updated and networking everything that turned up here keeping police agencies and media informed for nearly 3 days before they began to cover the case and even getting out personally and joining the search party? Is that doing nothing? And what about all the FReepers who are working hard at exposing and combating voter fraud? There were FReepers all over the place working at the polls for this past election and many more are contributing a great deal of time to researching, exposing and fighting voter fraud. By your remarks, I take it you think that is nothing too.

And let's not forget the less obvious. This is the best place I know online or off, to relax and unwind, to vent, to laugh, to exchange ideas, to recharge our batteries, to make plans and to make friends. I sure am sorry you can't find anything here.

So you like to play "cat and mouse?" Would you do that with your "sweetliberty?"

Of course you would not. So why are we being coy about our enemies? 15 of 17. Please correct me if I am wrong.

"The Alamance Independent," eh? Fine, I'm game. Let's take a look at this little publication; "By Their Works Shall Ye Know Them" and all that ...

At the very top of the page resides a Confederate battle flag and the tagline "Published in Occupied Confederate Territory." So the site owner just can't get past that Civil War thing, eh? OK, let's move on ...

Ah, here's three prominent links to various weather services, two of them (NWS and NOAA) US government agencies. Various articles within the website excoriate the federal government, paying taxes, et al., while happily pirating the services of that selfsame evuuuull big government. Slightly hypocritical, but that's life in the big city. Let's continue ...

Here's a red link on the left side of the page, flogging a book called "Unintended Consequences" by one John Ross. As most of you will probably remember, John Ross was an unsuccessful Democrat candidate for the Missouri House who was spanked by Jim Talent. Rut-roh, that couldn't be good ...

Oh, here's another ad, for a tome called "Civil War II" by Thomas W. Chittum. Mr. Chittum is an otherwise irrelevant and sad little man who urges his readers to "pee on the imperial American rag flag" rather than salute it. Oh, and even better? Messr. Chittum keeps some interesting company - his spittle-flecked polemic can be found at a web site called "www.churchfliers.com," which is apparently the house organ for a particularly revolting little band known as "The World Church of the Creator" (part of "the JOOZ have tails" crowd). Tsk tsk tsk ...

Lookie lookie, here's another interesting little link. "Gulf War Anti-White Racism Notting Hill London UK" . This one takes you eventually to this web site, a virtual repository for the British equivalent of the racist Deliverance crowd (at least two teeth per mouth, no waiting).

Yuck.

Ain't it amazing what a few minute's web surfing can turn up about "source material"? Now I need to go take a shower and burn my clothes - I'll never get the stench out.

What's wrong with my saying that intermarriage - period - is a bummer, when it's (at best) difficult as hell on any children involved?

You've sidestepped the obviously offensive sentence:

I will realize that mixed marriage both produces mutant kids

Please elaborate on your concept of "mutant kids".

Oh, I see. Another expert who expects that if it isn't in television or in newsprint it isn't happening.

I am not inclined to post those things which indicate things are being done. There are plenty of articles about pressure put on the Saudis, but I guess you want a big flapdoodle right as we go into Iraq. It isn't going to happen.

Either the President is ignoring Saudi transgressions (which I do not believe) or he is working behind the scenes to get them to do something about this (my personal opinion given the articles I have read).

I can't prove my opinion...but neither can you prove yours. We will just have to wait and see what happens. Diplomacy and warfare conceal many things from the public, in order to preserve the element of surprise; there are years to go in this war, and laying our cards on the table immediately would be counterproductive.

However, I do not expect those who are distrustful of the President to understand my way of thinking. Fortunately, most Americans do trust him to do what is best for the nation.
