California Sen. Dianne Feinstein says the Department of Defense should be prevented from moving any further with its so-called "Total Information Awareness" (TIA) program until Congress has specifically authorized it.
She says it could be used to gather vast amounts of personal information on U.S. citizens.
"If the Total Information Awareness program is not developed in a carefully prescribed manner, with close oversight from Congress, it could lead to an Orwellian America, where a person's every move is tracked by the government," Ms. Feinstein says. "I find this deeply disturbing."
The goal of the Total Information Awareness program is to create a tool to search vast quantities of data in thousands of government, as well as commercial, databases worldwide to determine links and patterns that might indicate terrorist activities.
The TIA would examine the connections between transactions such as passports, visas, work permits, driver's licenses, credit cards, airline tickets, rental cars, gun purchases, chemical purchases, bank accounts and telephone calls, and events such as arrests and suspicious activities.
"In my view, Congress needs to consider the full implications of the project on privacy and civil liberties now -- before the genie is out of the bottle," the senator says.

"All we would have to do is slow them to a trickle by closely inspecting everything and everybody that crossed from north to south."True. If the Democrats were in power I suspect they would be all for this stupid project.

Feinswine isn't concerned that the government is watching. She is angry that the Rats aren't in charge to use the info agains the Republicans and the citizens in general.

"Maybe she finally realized TOTAL includes her..." Or that the Bush Administration will have lots more interest in which CONGRESSCRITTERS subscribe to gay magazines than which right-wing constituents do!

I guess the old method of gathering 1000 FBI files will be out of date? The only ones who would fear this are the ones we fear.

Yes, we must re-elect Democrats to a majority and the presidency, so they can dismantle the "beast".

I liked your reply. Yes, it will include her and all her programmers and constituents....nation-wide. When I read her comments all I could think of was, "Ha Ha Ha Diane, now the shoe (or boot?) is on the other foot. How does it feel?"

Hey, maybe "Big Bro." can give a daily update on Di's sidearm of the day. She keeps her gun while striving to prevent anyone else from keeping theirs. We certainly need to be updated daily as to her "status of the moment". Can't afford to take no chances now. Huge threat here which MUST be addressed!

with close oversight from Congress Not that I think the fedgov should have unbridled access to private information, but when was the last time Congress gave 'close oversight' to anything?
