FReepers take great pains to thoroughly research their source material, and then link to those sources. That's one reason out of many why I like it so much here. Where you heard of FR doesn't come into the picture.

Unsubstianted allegations are frowned upon, and the allegations you're talking about were considered to be nothing more than diversionary tactics by the administration and it's lawyers. A pattern proven time and time again thoughout the past decade, so it's more likely to be true than not.

I hadn't known Hamid Karzai was a consultant with Unocal, but wasn't he also who the locals wanted in that position? It's extremely likely that anyone elected or appointed in that area would be a "consultant" for any number of oil companies, given the location. Afghanistan is in Central Asia and I should have typed/written more clearly. How we conduct ourselves in Afghanistan will affect our war on terror and in particular the likely coming war in Iraq, which will affect relations in the ME and access to oil for not just the US but the world. Re what Condi said, some officials had thought about planes crashing into the WTC or other high-profile buildings, but other officials thought the more likely scenario would be the traditional hijacking. We all want answers, but I personally don't think we can prevent things like 9/11 happening in all instances. There is too much chatter, the world is too big a place to monitor constantly and well. There are those that think Big Brother is here too much already, and I say, we can't have it both ways. Too much monitoring or not enough? Which is it. Will check in later - have to go bake 2 pies.

Everyone mentions oil as though it's a boogey man and the left keeps claiming all these conspiracies between President Bush and the Saudis - but that's all they do. Claim a conspiracy without a shred of evidence to back up their theories. The geopolitics of the world are complex, way beyond my knowledge, but I'd think the importance of oil was something we could all understand. Personally, I think this is a great time for the President to push for Alaskan oil drilling and alternate sources of fuel, etc. Happy Holidays, OldFriend.

Karzai is the USA's handpicked candidate; a rarity - a Pashtun but secular and modern. And with virtually no indigenous support in the country, unfortunately.
